Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. "This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain." That's all what Briar remembered the prophet telling, and it had left her confused. How could anyone get a second chance after dying? It sounded so... surreal. Briar played with the thought a while, ultimately dismissing it as a story meant for scaring hatchlings. Besides, she only had time to think about right now was getting back home, safe and sound. Briar had been traveling for days, just to meet the mysterious Arcane prophet. She had left in search for answers. Yet, after meeting the prophet, she somehow felt like she only got more questions than answers. All the effort for pure nothingness. Several days had passed since she started her journey back home. The thought of seeing her friends again filled Briar with bliss. It wouldn't take too long, a few days or so, and she could have a proper rest. She kept on going on, only stopping at a mysterious waterfall she hadn't seen before. Briar looked at it, trying to go on, but something about the waterfall kept calling her. Finally giving in, Briar found herself washing all her aches away. Relishing the coolness of the water, she heard an odd rumbling from above. Briar barely noticed the giant boulder washing down. Paralyzed from fear, all she could do, was to watch her demise falling on her. Only a few moments had passed when the boulder finally hit her, somehow only damaging the neck. Briar felt the rushing blood coming out. Making sure her pearl was safe, the young Pearlcatcher finally passed, welcoming the peace.. .. but the peace did not last. Out of nowhere, Briar was hit by an overwhelming pain of her resurrection. And, as to add more pain to her suffering, she saw her life passing by her eyes, again, and again. All the memories she had, disappearing one by one. It went on for what felt like days, easing only after Briar had been fully awoken. "Where... am I?" She remembered absolutely nothing else than her own name. Trying to think of possible events, the prophet's story came to her mind, and everything finally made sense. All events had led to this specific moment. She had gotten her second chance.
