Biography

mz9zekr.gif Smaragdine

The light clinking of the incense burners was calming to some. Not Smaragdine. To her, the noisy clatter and choking smell of the incense heightened her dislike of the wind temple. Why she had ever wanted to work in a place like this, Smaragdine didn’t know. The monotonous routine of lighting the incense day in and day out filled her soul with an emptiness best described as a black hole. What was even the point of incense? Its only purpose was smelling weird. Smaragdine sighed, setting down the incense and trudging over to the small gathering of dragons in the corner.

“Acolyte Domino. How fare thee?” she mockingly stated.

The teal dragon turned and frowned.

“Do not mock my language, thurifer. I am of higher status than you and should be respected as such.”

Smaragdine rolled her eyes. She never gave respect to people unless they had earned it. “I see you spent a considerable amount of money on-” Smaragdine squinted, “lottery tickets?”

Domino grabbed his ticket away.
“Keep your eyes to yourself, thurifer. Depart from me.” Domino gave her the death glare until she walked out of the wind temple and onto the bustling street. A lottery, thought Smaragdine. There was no chance of her winning, right? But still…

“Two tickets, please.” The golden Mirror looked up. “Huh?” it mumbled. “Oh, right! Sorry. That’ll be 10 treasure, please.” Smaragdine fished out the coins and handed them over. “Alright, I got your name down! Good luck!”

Smaragdine walked away with the ticket stubs in her claws. Imagine, she thought. 1 million treasure. Smaragdine tried to quell her hopes. So many people must have entered this lottery. What were the chances of her two tickets winning? At least it added some excitement.

“Hey! You!”

Smaragdine turned around to see a grey spiral dragon holding a censer.

“You bought a lottery ticket, yeah? I have something that can help you.” He held up the incense. “Lucky incense. It’s hard to find, but I did. It can be yours for 15 treasure,” he stated.

Smaragdine began to walk away but paused. There really wasn’t any harm in it. “Sure,” she sighed. The spiral’s eyes lit up as she handed over the money. “Thank you! You won’t regret it!”

Today was the day. Hundreds of dragons were crowded in the town square, eagerly chatting. Some were even making bets on who would win. Smaragdine looked down at her two ticket stubs. 11034 and 11035. If she won this lottery, it could change her whole life. Smaragdine wasn’t too eager to go back to the wind temple.

“Ahem!” a blue Skydancer said. The conversations slowly faded out as the suspense built. “We will now draw the winner of the one million treasure lottery.” Dragons that began to chat were shushed. “And the winner is…. 1-1-0-3…” The last number was drowned out by the excited chatter. “1-1-0-3-5,” the dragon repeated.

Smaragdine looked down. 11035! That was her number! “I have it!” she shouted out as she rushed up to the front. “I won!” Dragons enviously glared at Smaragdine as she made her way up front. “Congrats!” the Skydancer announced. “The one million treasure is yours!”

Adrenaline pumped through Smaragdine as she made her way home. One million treasure. What would she spend it on? She kept pinching herself to make sure it wasn’t a dream. One million treasure. She passed by the grey spiral dragon again and gave him a thumbs up. Did the incense even do anything? Who knows, thought Smaragdine.

As she passed by the wind temple again, someone was trying to catch her attention.

“Smaragdine!” the High Priest Tenebris called out.

He had never talked to her before.
“Smaragdine,” Tenebris panted as he ran to catch up with her, “I want to be the first to congratulate you on the gift that the Windsinger has granted you.” He smiled. “Perhaps you should show your thanks to the Windsinger by giving a gift to the temple. After all, you-”
Smaragdine cut him off. “I’m good, but thanks.”

She quickly hurried away. Before she had even gone ten paces, another dragon called out to her.
“Smaragdine! How are you doing?” Another Imperial was walking up to her.

“Who are you?” Smaragdine asked. The dragon chuckled.

“Oh, silly, I’m your great-aunt, remember?” Smaragdine frowned and shook her head.

“Anyways, congratulations on your win! I was thinking - I’m struggling to pay off my rent, and you have so much money, I’m sure you could spare some, correct?”

Smaragdine backed away. “Umm, I barely know you, so…” Smaragdine quickly flew off.

Sitting on the peak of a mountain, Smaragdine sighed. She hated being the center of all that attention. So many false friends trying to steal her money. Smaragdine tilted her head. Now that she had the money, what was keeping her here, anyway? She had always wanted to get away, but now she could! Smaragdine spread her wings. She had to go somewhere far away from Wind territory.

As she dove off the mountain, Smaragdine felt around for the lucky incense and hung it around her neck. It had helped her so far, and she wasn’t eager to get rid of it. Smaragdine watched the small scenery beneath her. She spit as she passed over the temple. Good riddance. Smaragdine put her eyes toward the horizon. Finally, she could say goodbye to her monotonous past, and hello to a new future.

The air was warm with the summer sun. The sounds of jingling bells and the scent of incense rode the winds for miles around. It was the height of the season in Cloudsong, and everyone was joyful for the occasion. Everyone, that is, except for one grumpy incense maid working at a nearby temple. Smaragine hated her job so intensely that even peaceful times like these made her want to punch the walls in on a ship. Although incense was something of great interest to her at first, it had now gotten boring.

She now wandered the streets of town, staring with contempt at the many merchant booths around her. The booth of a gold Mirror caught her interest, and she slowly meandered over. This had better be something better than lighting incense, she thought. The clinking of the incense and the scent of the foul gas was burned into her mind, and even as so much directing her senses back to it made her sick.

She eyed up the Mirror and quietly asked about his wares. “Lottery tickets!” was the excited, parroting reply. “5 treasure a ticket. The pool is one million treasure! Wanna buy!?” She quickly fished for the treasure in her pack and bought two tickets. She barely had any money left to sustain herself, let alone buy lottery tickets. Before the numbers were announced, she was also swayed into buying lucky incense. With the last of her money, she paid for it. Lottery tickets and incense… It was worth a reasonable shot.

The wind was just as warm as it was a couple weeks ago. Still garbed in her incense maid wear, she rode free on the wind. The lucky incense was tied around her neck, and unlike the choking smell of the smoky incense of the temples this lucky incense actually had very little smell to it. From the silver jingling tin that it was contained in, a faint salty sea rose up from the vents and tickled the nostrils. It was calming.

Smaragine flew out to the Sea of a Thousand Currents, travelling northeast away from Cloudsong. The treasure she carried with her was light and minute, barely able to be felt in her packs. Was it still worth it? She thought to herself, wondering if she would still be met with scammers as she travelled. With all the treasure at her disposal, she could easily find a new career for herself.

As she flew over the reaches of the sea, the scent of the water calmed her. It was better than having to sniff boring old incense all day, as with anything else. Thinking it would be nice to have a rest, she plopped down onto the sand and stretched out her sore body. Noticing a trail of seashells alongside the shore, she eagerly picked up the shells one by one, her curiosity awakened by them. The sounds of the water and crying birds, with no one around for miles, was comforting.

The sun was just getting to set, and the clouds were following its path through the sky carefully, almost like a cape trailing behind a king. The sky was being splashed with many colors, a paintbrush of wonders trailing along the hues of pinks, yellows and blues. Perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep coming here year after year? After all, the Water flight’s territory was mostly filled with oracles and seers who cared naught for money, although the thought of staying and being robbed terrified her.

She nearly felt her skeleton jump out of her skin when a Spiral with a deep blue, almost crystalline hide trailed alongside her. Her eyes were light green, indicating a Wind flight origin. Smaragine started to panic, hoping this wasn’t another scammer who had followed her. The Spiral abruptly stopped and started to notice who she was walking alongside. Smaragine could see this Spiral was not only an older dragon, but a seer as well, garbed in deep blue silks and satins.

The Spiral turned to look up at Smaragine and blinked at her a few times, noticing the presence of the . Finally, she stepped back and spoke a single, thought-provoking sentence.

“Travel doesn’t have to be a matter of money. It can be whatever you make of it, Smaragine.”

With a sudden breeze, the cryptic seer figure was gone. Smaragine knew, deep down, that she was right. And no matter what happened, she vowed to never forget what she was told.
