Biography

prized assassin: karina
6343.png19260.png24502.png

"Trust me."
status: cautiously working in tandem with the order of sera noire.
deceitful sly cunning quick gentle bookworm intuitive

"Sir?"
"Shush, little one. You must stay still." The Ridgeback urged. He pushed Karina behind the corner. "Do not speak or the robed ones shall come like they have your sisters. You are not to move from this spot. Not until you hear my voice tell the names of your father and your mother or the sun breaks the line of the horizon and stains the clouds red. Do you understand? Speak, child--do you understand?"

There had been many occasions when Karina witnessed the older male speak as sharply as he did and with such sincere concern. Often the gruff gentleman kept to himself and provided Karina with basic produce like fish and fruit in exchange for her keeping the home well-kept and tidy. The living situation had never been ideal but at that very moment Karina could not help but think it had been the best home she had ever resided in since.....

"Do you understand!?" The Ridgeback hissed. "Karina!"

The voices beyond the door began to grow louder. Strange lights of purple and blue flickered like a flame in the window panes as the wind whistled through cracks and blew out one of the only candles providing light.

"Karina. Clouds as red as my eyes. The names of your mother, your father, and your sisters--no less will do." The dragon's red Plague eyes shined in the dim remnants of light. "For the old Gods as well as my new... you must promise me."

"I promise." Karina whispered.

"It has been a while. Come in--come in." The Skydancer ushers Karina in without a second glance and motions for the guard to move away so the two can have some privacy. Nyx takes no time in settling at his desk and filing through a paper or two while Karina looks around.

The place has not changed. Despite Pendulum's washy history and frequent arrival and departure of clan members the Inner Sanctum's Second Hall is just as tidy as when she last visited. One of her clan's monarchs-the Skydancer in front of her-is rumored to be an organizational deity and while Karina lacks many divine superstitions she lends credit to the idea and finds it amusing to dwell on. She walks silently to one of the towering shelves lining the walls and peeks and squints at varying artifacts.

"Water's domain. In all honesty I forgot how they got here," Nyx grunts from behind an open book with a pen in one set of talons and a fresh sheet of paper in the other. "Many strange things happen in this clan. Artifacts of the deep are among the least concerning when you look at it from an outsiders perspective."

Karina pauses. "I think of many things. That was not one of them."

The Skydancer leans back in chair and closes his book. His yellow Light eyes gaze incredulously at the Coatl. "One of the few individuals I can trust my mate's life with and I still do not know how you think, Karina."

"Many things. Many things," Karina repeats with a nod. "I would not expect you to know all of them. Nor most of them--if any at all."

"Is that on purpose?" Nyx furrows his brows.

The Coatl's face is blank. Her eyes drift back to the collection of items the monarch has meticulously placed across different shelves. There are many secrets to be found in all of them: a piece of obsidian rumored to have fallen from the Forger's steps; a prism that spells the messages of the Weaver from rays of light; a scroll dated to one of the first pilgrimages to the Warden's frozen domain; the artifacts of the depths and the time before a time that is encrypted in the dead language that not even the Lord can discern from his keep. The list goes on for a long while. Karina makes a mental note of everything she recognizes. It takes a few minutes for her to register what Nyx said.

"It may have been once. Miss." The Coatl states. She tilts her head and looks the Skydancer up and down. "Intentional or not--I am many things you do not wish to know of."

Nyx can't resist a bout of chuckles. He gestures to his own body and smiles gently. "No more than I wish to not know of that which now taints myself, Karina. You have seen the Shade and their writhing, tightening grip on me. The Gods themselves are sure to look upon me with disgust for the path I have chosen. What can be so horrifying that even the damned cannot know of it?"

"Many things." Karina mutters under breath. Her eyes glint beneath a pair of colored contacts that block out any colors hinting at her true draconic element. She turns away from Nyx and slouches. "Even if I wanted to I could not say. It has been too long. The day the sky kissed the earth and the world was stained red... If I started from there it would not be enough. I cannot begin an empty tale without a beginning and my beginnings are lost to the wind."

There's a pause. Nyx contemplates in his chair--evident by the taps of pen against paper and the smears of ink rapidly appearing on the once-blank sheet.

"I will not disrespect you but I strongly urge you not to speak in the same cryptic voice you address the majority of the world by, Karina. I worry I do not always understand and some matters must be clear and concise when discussed. Especially with Raine. Always with Raine--understand?"

Nyx is a strong and benevolent leader but a confusing one at times. Karina dismisses the thought with a stiff nod.

"I promise--no. I will do my best, miss." Karina says.

The Skydancer gestures a hand toward the chamber's entrance. His eyes are soft and considerate. "If you are ever ready to talk, Karina... I will be here. You have my word. You never have to speak but if there comes a day when you wish to this offer will remain as it was from now until my final hour. I will be an open ear. An open book. An open spirit to hear what you desire to say."

Karina bows her head and shuffles out the room quietly. Before she leaves she stops and glances back. A smile tugs the corners of her lips. "Who is the cryptic one now, miss?"

Despite holding tremendous influence over key figures in Pendulum and being one of its oldest members Karina struggles to maintain a consistent presence long enough to settle in. A myriad of events that spot the empty slate of memories that was once her childhood led her into a dangerous line of work that she never got out of. While she has survived to her age now the same mental strife that plagued her mind when it was as it were years ago continues to ravage and disrupt her flow of life. She has little sense of self outside of a small persona pieced together for the sake of appearances in the clan and her pasttime hobby: romance novels.

While most of her time is spent on assignments handed out by Pendulum's two monarchs or as contracted hits to entities she is forced to keep ties with Karina manages to sneak in book time some days and spends hours pouring over different romance series. Any genre with a hint of gay romance in it is her new favorite and she scarfs down the content in a dream-like state. On one occasion Karina has fallen asleep mid-novel and daydreamed about a beautiful, happy life where her family was not mercilessly slaughtered and stolen from her and she is able to meet the woman of her dreams and settle down far from all blades and blood.

When it comes to the entire clan Karina has the most self-restraint of all members. She can process and respond to complex and changing situations quickly thanks to years of reinforced training specifically designed for assessing critical scenarios at a rapid pace. In addition to her prowess at reading emotions Karina has an excellent aim with throwing knives as well as knowledge of how to kill using thirty-eight separate common arms sold among street rats of Sornieth. She has become a master at using double-edged daggers and can slit a throat as quickly as one fillets a fish.

Due to her lack of personal traits that define her as an individual Karina has periods where she breaks down and every little piece of her facade ebbs away until she is the same sobbing mess she was when she was a child. This has only ever happened once on a job and Karina discovered at that time that tears are but one way to make a hit lower their guard long enough to have a rope around their neck and their face turn blue.

If a stranger approaches Karina they will meet with her clan persona: composed if not stoic, gentle, and a bit snarky or witty at the right time. She engages in cordial discussion as any dragon might but no one can pry far enough as she is a genius when it comes to making up alibis and fake histories depicting her past, her family, and any other relations that are relevant to the topic at hand. Karina is unashamedly gay for ladies and while she will not share personal information to them she sometimes goes out of her way to give them a hand--especially if she thinks someone is about to hurt them, regardless of circumstances.

Serves in the Order. More of a 'floater' who works alongside the different captains. Karina has previously helped rear several Hatchlings, both inside and outside the Order and former Clan Pendulum. The Hatchlings left in her care are cared for like her own children.
