She is wide-eyed and all kinds of curious when she first arrives, drinking in the sights and sounds, the towering spires of crystal, melodious birdsong, endless blue sky. Her new mother is delighted by her daughter’s inquisitive nature, laughs a lovely bell-like sound when the little one pokes her nose into and consequently gets stuck in an upturned pot. But she is exposed to the first true wonder of this world when night falls, and the sky opens up above her, and she sees the stars. The realm from which her mother once came. The next morning she pipes up and tells her mother that she’s going to be an explorer. That she’s going to go back, and wander amongst the constellations some day. I hope so, little one, her mother tells her, voice bursting with fondness and warmth. I hope so.

Not all of her dreams are this sort of grandiose, but in some ways, this innocent wish is the one that sticks with her the most. She grows up, as all children do, and although she has not yet reached the stars she has become the wanderer she was always meant to be. Each day she roves from place to place, uncovering new journeys, new places, new people, new things. She never loses that curiosity, even as she explores every inch of this realm. Each discovery is met with the same wide-eyed wonder she possessed as a child. It’s not the stars, not yet, but someday, she’ll be there.
