xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxV A L R O T H .
the primordial | the celestial king
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

xxxxxA storm struck. Of a kind the clan had never seen before. It was as if the Icewarden raged against the Shade, or perhaps the Flamecaller was bearing down upon the Fortress of Ends. Wind and snow, sleet and freezing rain. Parts of the lair collapsed, much of it imploded. The numerous pipes used for heating burst, sent steam throughout the countless tunnels. Wraith became trapped in the depths of his labyrinth as he desperately tried to find a solution to save all those in his care. Auria begged him to flee, evacuate their home and try their luck in the squall outside. Wraith knew that to be death. But it seemed staying would leave them no better. Even Serrach prepared precious eggs and hatchlings for escape. Starling would leave Wraith's side for nothing. Eyes wide in fear she knew nature's power, prayed that their end would be a quick one.

One dragon alone remained hopeful. Baurik had faith in his friends and families. Was positive salvation waited for them. So despite the warnings and roars of anguish calling him back to them the spiral set out into the storm. None but his faithful skycat at his side. The familiar was known to be older than even Wraith, and oddly enough it was the one that lead Baurik. Without hesitation or care for it's own safety the skycat plunged ahead. The spiral doesn't recall what happened when he lost sight of his ancient friend and constant companion. Can't remember how he survived. All he knows is as the skycat's tail disappeared in the whiteout, never to be seen again, he heard a bellow, and then silence.

Back at the lair Wraith, Auria, Serrach, and Starling worked at a feverish pace. Wraith would reroute this here, have Auria support that ceiling there, have Starling some druid magic to support his systems, as Serrach calmed the most panicked. Rezz, Althea, and Lavi turned their fighting skills to use to dig out a collapsed room. Luthien and Aveti channeled the power of arcane and sea, Warden sent urgent messages to the Icewarden, no dragon kept was idle. Every last member of the clan fought tooth and claw to survive and live. And it wasn't enough.

The systems were failing, the labyrinth was on the brink of complete collapse. There could be no escape, the resulting explosion would hollow the land for miles around.

And then an Imperial flew in, bright and shining as dawn, carrying a frantic and nearly frozen Baurik in his talons.

"Quite the storm you're stranded in here."

His voice was laughter, it's deep tenor solidifying the ice around them, freezing the walls in place with a summoned gale. Pale green yes swept the room, and somehow he seemed to make eye contact with every dragon present within a breath. As if he spoke to them all individually while he settled Baurik gently before Starling.

"All will be well. Lend me your strength."

And then he began a song, or continued it, the thrum of the beginning notes moving in time to the howling gale outside.

He'd been chasing such a storm, he had been flying merrily with it, joyous to have found a primal force of the 'cloudsong' he so loved. What odd chance, that it had let him here, to an ancient friend, and into the arms of a clan that already felt like home.

It was a melancholy song at first, and Wraith seemed confused that this music, this gale that the imperial seemed to carry, was powerful. A magic of a type the spiral had never witnessed before. Ancient in feel, far older than he knew, something so basic, so trite and yet now in this moment it kept the howling death at bay, and wrapped this small refuge in a safe embrace.

Melancholic because Valroth had been unable to save the skycat, his friend had given all to summon the imperial, to shield Baurik, to bring a miracle to this clan so close to eradication.

And it had worked.

The clan joined the magical song, each with a voice all their own, and together they learned the ancient magics of that Imperial's song. Heard tale of creation, and ages before their own, and with that knowledge of beginning they built safety around them in the notes. Each adding their own tone to the choir.

As the song continued it moved from melancholy to strength, there was no doubt anymore. They could win, they could survive, and as they beat down the storm outside with their own summoned force the song shifted once more to joy, celebration, and as the threatening winds died away, blustering uselessly against their spell, it became a song of greeting.

It ended in a satisfied hum, Valroth's voice alone echoing last, "Hmm, it would seem you all have much to learn. Think I'll stay awhile."

And he grinned.

xxxxxOne of the Ancients. Hatched while the Windsinger still formed the great Cloudsong and among the first dragons to discover Sornieth. The world was new when he was. And he has known as many days as any dragon that is not a deity. Has walked and flown for as long as even his father and mother.

Those throughout Sornieth may not know his name, but they feel his influence. His descendants are of every dragon breed, reside in every flight, and stretch on through the ages. They have founded their own clans. Lived, fought, and moved on. Valroth has seen much change, and known much to stay the same.

He has never been close to his parents. For Valroth believes he had two beginnings in his life. The first being that day he hatched. He can still recall looking up at his fluffy tundra father and fastidious guardian mother with love and adoration. Found comfort in their soft green eyes. His more favored old memories include his numerous siblings. Sash, the eldest and...most peculiar perhaps. Amalthea and Davesprite, whom they speak of no more after their loss. And finally Coda. Valroth's dearest brother.

For while they were young and still growing amidst the beginnings of The Cloudsong they were swept up in a terrible storm. Amalthea and Davesprite were swept away, never to be seen again. But the other three...they were changed forever. Valroth isn't sure how Coda and Sash might have experienced that night. Perhaps it was different for them. But he remembers his fear of the storm, recalls fighting against it, tried to find ground, safety, anything to keep him from the gale that threatened to tear him apart.

Then he heard laughter. Frist deep like thunder, then high and whistling nearby, there was a flash of green and a blast of spring scented air. Valroth only glimpsed the Windsinger as the great deity raced with the storm. But in that moment he grasped a greater truth. Watched as the long sinuous dragon flew. His deity didn't fly against or fight the wind. That dragon was the wind. Valroth stopped fighting. Relaxed and kept his eyes on the Windsinger. He angled his wings, swept his tail, and then he heard it.

Whistling at his ears as he let himself go. The song the storm sang as the wind swept over all he could see. At that moment he joined the chorus. Threw away the fear and dread of smashing into the ground. Valroth opened his wings and sang. After that it was easy to stay aloft, and it was simple to follow the ways of the Windsinger. Valroth had found the song in the sky, followed the true twisting crescendo for the first time.

Valroth is not sure how long the song lasted or when he landed. He recalls catching up to the Windsinger and speaking with the deity. He was allowed a solo, learned to laugh amid the danger of the squall. That was the day of Valroth's second and true beginning. For when he finally did descend he towered above his parents, an Imperial. The Windsinger and the chorus he had joined forever changed him. Valroth took on the moniker of The North Wind and from that day he has chased true cloudsong throughout all of Sornieth.
