Biography
Epipela
Goddess of the Shallow Seas
It is the epipelagic zone dragons see when the sun's warm midday rays strike the azure seascape that stretches, almost without end, to the horizon of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. It is the epipelagic zone where Water Flight hatchlings may ride dolphins and collect dead coral bits from the fine white sand on the seafloor. The epipelagic zone is the jewel of the waters, almost literally: it glistens like jade and sapphire, inviting all to submerge themselves in the placid shallows where multicolored fish swarm and coral twists and turns its vibrant patterns in a work of natural art.
Epipela is fortunate enough to rule it all, a benevolent nurturer of shallow-sea life and one of the most beloved and revered deities in the Water dragonflight's pantheon. Her altruism, however, contrasts starkly with the harsh and brooding character of her brother. Whereas Epipela glides through turquoise seas, patrolling her prosperous kingdom, Benthic broods in the depths, greedily pulling down the dead and dying in a vain attempt to populate his barren realm to the extent that Epipela populates hers.
Their domains and differences in character have led to a divine feud, one that has, according to the mythos, lasted millennia. Epipela's followers are forbidden from visiting the Leviathan Trench, for fear of conversion—the same applies to Benthic's secretive mystery to a far greater extent. But while Benthic seeks to destroy and conquer Epipela's territory once and for all, Epipela wishes only to subdue her violent brother and secure the safety of her precious reefs.
Epipela is widely considered an artist. The Water dragonflight credits her in many religious works as a constant creator of life, fashioning fish and marine invertebrates from bleached coral and then painting them with all the colors on the known spectrum. The coral itself is hers, too—Epipela can bring a whole reef to spring forth from seemingly bare rocks or forbidding, waterlogged shipwrecks with a single command.
There are few who have seen the shallow-sea goddess. Those who have describe her as having scales that mimic the ebb and flow of the tide, that glisten an alluring aquamarine hue and possess ripples of lighter and darker shades in eye-catching imitation of the waves. Epipela is followed constantly by an entourage of fish, a living, breathing, swimming rainbow of fins and tails and smooth scales. She cuts an impressive yet kindly figure, equally capable of intimidating and comforting those she looks upon.
- Epipela's sacred animal is the sea turtle. After ritual sacrifices, Water Flight soothsayers attempt to foresee the future based on the patterning of the sacrificed turtle's scutes.
- Epipela's priests wield staffs of Acropora coral, colonies of which are considered sacred and frequently grown for decoration in underwater temples.
- Shark-tooth necklaces depict priests' rank in the religious order, as they represent both the necessity of shallow seas (as sharks are a necessity of the food web) and Epipela's ability to cause devastation despite a seemingly pacifistic demeanor.
- A week-long celebration honoring Epipela is held in the week directly preceding the Wavecrest Saturnalia. Perhaps because of how wild Saturnalian festivities are, Epipela is recognized with quiet prayer, fasting, sacrifices, and diving among the coral reefs.
- Her priesthood is situated in the Fishspine Reef.
