He stared at the piece of paper in his hand. The big red ‚rejected‘ seemingly laughing at him from the middle of the page.
He can already hear the disapproving ‘tut’ from his step-mother and the disappointed sigh on his fathers lips. ‘why can’t you be like your siblings?’ their eyes would say, but the words were never spoken.
This is the third time the Arcanists’ Academy for Magic has failed him on the entrance exam and at this point he questions why he is even trying anymore. He wasn’t like his family. Like his brilliant Father, who studied with the most prestigious mages in the Oculus of the Eleven or his disciplined step-mother who studies the arcane arts all over Sornieth.
If anything, he very much turned out like his mother, ‘a good for nothing shadow temptress’ his step-mother liked to call her. His father did not like to talk about her.
‘Be grateful we were the ones to take you in’ he just murmurs whenever he got asked.
But here he was, failed yet again at something even his youngest sibling can do. ‘Shadow dragons are just not meant to practice arcane magicks’, the lovely lady at the front desk told him gently.
But his father was an Arcane dragon wasn’t he? A strong one at that, did he really inherit nothing of that talent? And if not, then what was he good at?

He did not dare to go home yet. Instead he swung himself into the air and flew to the outskirts of the Starwood Strand, where the grass is already starting to rot and turn the reddish brown of the Plague Flights territory. Somewhere behind the red hills he can see lies the home of his mother.
Not for the first time he wonders if he would be happier there. What is the shadow flight like? Rumours call them tricksters, tempters and mischief makers.
If he closes his eyes and concentrates he can almost feel the shadows calling to him, beckoning him home. He can imagine their cool grasp on him, almost tangible like he could reach out and pull the shadows right out from under him.
His fathers voice echoes in his head ‘stay away from the shadows boy, they tempt you, only to pull you under’ and so he lets go of the feeling, opens his eyes and spreads his wings to return home.
He hears his siblings snicker as his step-mother berates him for his newest failure.
‘We’re a family of scholars, child, failure in your education is just not an option!’ Mind you, he was a fully grown dragon at this point, but he doubted that his family would ever acknowledge that fact until he can prove himself worthy.
‘Maybe I’m just not meant for the arcane’, he dared whispering. The snickering stopped. His step-mother flared her nostrils and he can feel the familiar buzz of her magic swirling around him. He should not have said that. ‘You are part of this family. Magic runs in your veins. You will not fail again, are we clear?’ Her magic pushed against him, wrapping itself around him and squeezes him until he has trouble breathing. He nodded silently.
Another year another entrance exam. And this time his parents were with him. Great, just great.
He wonders if they’d finally disown him after witnessing his failure first hand. And he could already tell this was another failure just waiting to happen.
He studied every day this past year, and yet he still barely held the power needed to conjure even the simplest spells.
The lady at the front desk offers him a sympathetic smile when she gave him his papers. At least one person in this world seemed to pity him for the situation he is in. The other dragons meet his eyes with cold, calculated stares. They knew him. They also knew his chances of passing the exam were slim.
The dragons that lined up with him were much younger than him. But despite their young age, when asked to step forth and present the spell they were tasked with, they produced a blinding pink ray of arcane energy that hit the target dummies with deadly accuracy.
He swallowed hard when his name was called. He closed his eyes and tried to feel for the magic inside him like his father advised him. But there was nothing there.
Desperately he tried to conjure the spell, but the only thing he managed was a faint pink mist that shimmered in the air before him before dissolving into the air.
The familiar giggling started behind him, he met his parents cold gaze, disappointment thick and heavy in the bright pink orbs.
He could hear the instructor sigh heavily and prepared for the yearly humiliating speech about his shortcomings.
It wasn’t fair. He was not meant for this he could feel it. But if that was not what he was meant for, what was?
This felt wrong. He felt hot rage bubble up inside him. If he was not born in the arcane flight, why was he supposed to learn their magic? Why would his parents go through these length to deny him his mothers heritage??
He would show them. Shut them up once and for all. He pressed his eyes shut and reached out for the familiar pull of the dark. Shadows grasped at him, prodding at his senses as if asking for his permission. But instead of pushing them away as usual, he let them wash over him, engulf him completely and then lashed out, made the darkness catapult away from him and into the room.
The blood was rushing in his ears, his heart was pounding! This felt right, so so right! He did it! He successfully used the shadow's magic!
When he came down from his adrenaline rush and opened his eyes and the room had fallen into chaos. Shadows were creeping over the floor and up the walls, the Instructor struggled to free himself from the dark tendrils, his parents looked at him in shock and the little ones squealed and screamed in fear, some sweeping at their eyes that seemed to be completely covered in darkness.
Panic gripped him.
Did he go too far? He didn’t mean for this to happen… or did he? He couldn’t remember his own thoughts anymore.
After one last painful gaze towards his father, he hurled himself towards the window of the narrow room and flung himself high into the air.
He did not stop his frantic escape until he could see the dark trees in front of him. The moon was already high in the sky and his body ached.
Exhausted, he plopped down onto a cold black stone. The air in the Woods was much cooler than on the Starfall Isles, it made him shiver all the way to the tip of his tail.
He briefly wondered if he should try to find a place for the night, but he wouldn’t know where to go. With a heavy sigh he rolled himself into a tight coil and let the events of the day pass through his head again.
For the first time in his life, he used true magic. But it ended up hurting the people around him. His father was right, the shadows pulled him under when he gave into their tempting. If only he had listened.
‘How long do you plan on wallowing in self-pity?’ A high pitched voice toned behind him. He spun around and stared at a small Fae dragon perched on a rock close to him. She wore a shimmering coat and had shadow rune drawn onto her forehead that shone bright in themoonlight. She looked at him curiously, eyeing his coiled up form from her perch.
He wanted to tell her to leave him alone, but the words got stuck in his throat.
‘You should be proud, you know? Not everyone can pull of a Shroud spell that powerful’ His head shot up and he stared at her directly now. He opened his mouth to ask her if she’d been following him, but she just raised her hand and continued ‘I was wondering what you might be about when the Mother of Shadows herself spoke to me and asked to find you. A child of the Woods lost all alone in a foreign land. Really, when I found you I thought you were nothing special. But by the Shadows, I was wrong about that wasn’t I?’ She shot him a smirk.
‘The Mother of Shadows? What are you talking about?’, he asked confused.
‘The Shadowbinder, of course. One of the Eleven has taken an interest in you. No wonder, the magic you possess is pretty impressive, you know?’
‘Magic? No. I don’t have magic. I failed my exams, over and over and over. I’m sorry, but your so called Deity must have the wrong dragon.’
The little Fae threw her head back laughing, a loud and clear sound in the silence of the night.
‘No magic he says… Ah, look here my friend. You are a Shadow dragon. And no matter what your family thinks, you cannot escape your birthflight. It dictates the magic you can conjure. As a Shadow Dragon, your magic originates in these woods. What your so-called family wanted to force you to do was to make use of an element you hold no power over. By all means, that should not be possible. And yet, you almost had it there. I have seen it from the shadows, that pink mist you conjured? That was arcane magic, as weak as it may have been. You have channeled an element, you should have no control over whatsoever! And that shadow magic you used? Do you realize how hard it should be to shroud a whole room in darkness?’ She smiles at him gently ‘You’re a special one. The Mother of Shadows makes no mistakes’
He tried to process what she just said to him. you’re a special one
‘So, why is the Shadow Deity be interested in me?’ The little Faes eyes lit up with delight.
The Onyx Idol of the Shadowbinder stares at him from cold black eyes. He feels his skin crawl, but tries to ignore it as the little Fae finishes her explanation.
‘So let me get this straight, you want me to devote myself to a Deity I have barely any connection to, to help train young dragons that may one day be sent to her to serve her?’
‘That’s right!’
He fiddled with the hem of the coat the Fae – Rose – gave him to shield against the Tangled Woods chill.
‘Why would I do that?’
‘Becaaaaause, you will be granted unlimited access to the records on elemental magic, with all the time you could ever ask for to learn and train yourself’ He can’t deny that these words tempt him. Who knows what is locked away in these archives?
He threw a cautious gaze to the onyx idol. Accept my blessing it seemed to say Accept my blessing and all the knowledge in these halls shall be yours
Tempting, oh so tempting. Rose was still patiently lounged on a pillow, waiting for his reply. Did he really want to spend his life in servitude to a Deity? Then again, where else would he go? He’d never get a chance like this. Maybe it was time for him to embrace his shadow heritage.
‘Very well, I will stay’ The young Fae flared her crests and jumped at him happily.
‘You’re making the right choice, uh…? Sorry, I don't think I caught your name?’
He opened his mouth to tell her his given name, but stopped.
His name was the last thing connecting him to his arcane past. Why should he keep it? He is a shadow dragon. A trickster, a tempter a mischief maker… He smirked.
‘Call me Mischief.’
