the historian
Anya has been here since the beginning. She's seen countless dragons come and go, each of them remarkable or noteworthy in their own way. Some of them were very near and dear to her heart, and she still feels the stabbing emptiness of their loss every day. Other she spoke to only in passing, but this only makes her wonder what more there was to know about them.
She knows that this is the way of life here. She knows that eventually, the old must move on to make way for the new, and that many dragons who come here are just passing through. Still, she feels that it's important to remember. Some dragons who arrive here have no family to speak of, no friends who miss them. Anya speaks to every new dragon, she learns their stories; their triumphs and their demons. When they leave, she alone feels their absence.
Anya has decided that she will record them all, the dragons who have made their mark on her. She will not forget them. And maybe, when new dragons come and see how much she cares, they will leave knowing just a little more peace, knowing that no matter what becomes of them, one dragon will remember.

Nero
Nero was a fierce warrior, a great leader, and a loving father. He was a member of this clan for over 2 years. He raised countless hatchlings and saw them on to the next chapter of their life. He was devoted to his clan and his family. He was reasonable in times of conflict, but if things escalated, Nero could be quite hot-headed and would fight hard for his side. The day Nero decided to leave was like any other. Nero was quiet all morning. His mate didn't think anything of it, assuming he was just tired. It turns out, he was. But not in the way she thought. He was tired of everything. When she asked what was wrong, he told her that his bones ached, his mind was numb with exhaustion, and just rising every morning had become a chore to him. He told her that it wasn't her fault, but he had to leave. He told her the Lightweaver was ready for him, and serving her was the only thing that he could imagine that could mend his broken mind. She begged him and begged him not to go, but he left that night while she slept. The next day, the only remnant of his that remained was his pearl. He had left it behind. When she picked it up, she felt horribly wrong; touching a pearlcatcher's pearl was one of the worst violations imaginable. But he was gone, what could she do? As she turned it over in her hands, she saw the large, gaping crack that crept up its sides. Her heart dropped to her stomach. She knew this was the reason he had felt like his world was crumbling and his only option was to go meet his deity. He must have thought he could beg her to give him a new, whole pearl in return for his service. She knew then that there was nothing she could have done to stop him. It wasn't her fault. At least, this is what she told herself. But she never truly believed it.
Historian's note: I loved Nero more than anything in this world. For years, where he went, I went. Our hatchlings were our pride and joy. His loss still hurts me every day. Some days, I don't even think I can continue. He was my pearl. I know that I failed him. I didn't even know his pearl had broken. However it happened, I should have stopped it. Or I should have found a way to fix it in this world. These days, I doubt my purpose in this clan. There will be no more hatchlings. Only this ledger. I will record the dragons who pass through my clan. Maybe it will be of some comfort to other who lose those they love. I will continue it while I can.

Kasmira
Kasmira was my first hatchling. I remember the moment she hatched like it was yesterday. It was our first nest; mine and Nero's. Five eggs. We were overwhelmed, but so excited. She was the first to hatch, about a day before the others. I loved them all, of course, but Kas always had a special place in my heart, being the first. She was the only one from that nest who decided to stay with our clan. She was always so sweet. Innocent, fragile, not an ounce of meanness in her body. Every loved her for this, of course, but she was so easily broken. I tried to protect her from the whole world, but there's only so much a mother can do. She fell hard for Sylvester when he came to our clan. Like everyone else, he adored Kas. They had a nest of eggs together. She raised them; she adored them. But they all decided to leave our clan, to pursue a life away from their birth clan. I told her it was normal. In fact, all her nest-mates had decided the same thing. But she was devastated. I didn't know what to do. Sylvester was even worse. I don't blame him for breaking her heart more. He was just clueless, and young. He tried to comfort her for weeks, but eventually he drifted away. Despite their distance, it utterly broke her when he took a new mate.
Sylvester and Sophie were made for each other, and that stands true to this day. No one can deny that, not even a mother, looking for someone to blame for her first child's broken heart. Kas was too good for this world. She couldn't handle it. When she decided to leave, to serve the Lightweaver, I could only support the decision. I couldn't watch her suffer anymore.
