Scratch at the Door - Shadow in the Mirror - Bump in the Night
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
If you are brave enough to travel the halls of the House of Echidna, you might encounter any number of strange sounds and otherworldly whispers. (These become easy to ignore with practice, but for safety reasons practice is not recommended. It is better to be disturbed and annoyed than caught unawares, where these noises are concerned.) Yet there is one whisper, one scrape of claw on the back of a mirror, one knocking on a door locked and chained, that chills even Echidna’s blood. It is the persistent plea of the Anathema, begging you to let them in. Into the house, into the world, out of the shadows. However, I will not have to tell you to ignore Anathema’s cry. You would never dream of letting them in. The idea itself repels you, their call like some twisted inverse of the siren’s song. You would do anything to get away, to make sure the creature never finds a crack to slip through. This is by design. Anathema is a creature cursed, banished to the world on the other side of shadow and glass for unspeakable crimes. What crimes, exactly, depend on what you find unspeakable. Echidna remembers Anathema as a sadistic monster-hunter who posed as a member of her coven to get close enough to murder the House dragonets in their eggs. For this, Echidna summoned powerful magic to seal her in a world of eternal darkness. Bram remembers her as a treasonous son of Echidna herself, who tried to destroy the House he saw as a threat to his own ambitions. He came close to destroying the House too many times, and took too many lives in the process, before Echidna finally tearfully sealed him away for the safety of the rest of her children. Risk remembers them as a two-faced harlot who tried to steal Throne’s heart. She banished them, of course, and it served them right. Throne can’t really be bothered to remember mortals, but if pressed they might say they vaguely remember Anathema spoiling the end of a particularly good book, and just coincidentally falling into hell. To Lankester, her whispers sound like the hissing voice of his twisted goddess, begging for release. To Jekyll, its scratching sounds like the universe-destroying ooze pressing at the seems of reality. To Caligari, his knocking at the door is obviously a debt collector, or maybe a cop. Whatever the listener hates the most, what they fear letting in (or out), is what they hear when Anathema calls. Whether that is a plague or a plague of rats, an eldritch god or a well-armed ex. Someone was determined Anathema should not be allowed into our world, so they placed a curse on them to make sure everyone else felt just as strongly about that as they did. If you ask Echidna, it was her, and her memory of Anathema's crimes alone is correct. But isn’t that just what the curse would want her to believe? What if Anathema was sealed behind the mirrors long before Echidna or anyone else moved in? What if they were innocent?
