It had been eons since the golem had seen another being. Having been left on his own for so long, he had started to rust in place. The ever churning currents did little to keep his sides smooth; instead, it carried small coral polyps that took purchase wherever they could. Tiny branches had just started to poke from his sides when something disturbed the fae's slumber.

Voices, though seemingly distant, were the first things that grabbed his attention; the next was the dull vibrations of footsteps causing the surface of the water to ripple. Seated from the bottom of a pool, the rusted construct could hardly see what was causing all the ruckus. With a great heave of his wings, he shed the adolescent coral from his body and propelled himself upwards. His head poked above the water, allowing his gaze to rest upon a small ragtag group of dragons. A coatl with wings the color of the sky, a mirror with a scar-riddled hide, and a spiral who looked like the warcat who caught the java sparrow. Eyes narrowing, he grasped the edge of the pool and heaved himself upwards.

"Who are you?" he rasped, his voice like the sound of claws on slate. All heads whipped to fae and the mirror let out a warning hiss. "Who ARE you?" he repeated, louder this time. Drawing himself to his full size--which was admittedly small--he faced the intruders with a ridged stance. He was rusted and perhaps slower than them but he was tasked to protect this place, and protect it he shall.

It was the coatl that approached first, whipping her tail to tell her companion to stand down. "We come in peace," she started, "We're merely looking for a new home; we mean no harm to you." Her voice was low, steady, if a bit breezy; her wings were folded against her side, and her gaze was even. Uncertainty flashed through the fae. Perhaps these weren't intruders? No. This was his home. He was meant to protect it.

"You need to l-l-l-leave," he insisted, his words coming in a bit of a stutter. He attempted to move into a more defensive position but his rusted joints made it hard. Instead, he had to settle in an awkward half-stance. Perhaps he wasn't in as good of a shape as he thought. A few moments of hesitation and then he ground out a last word: "Please." He wasn't so sure he'd be able to fend them off if it came to it so he ought to at least try being courteous.

Several moments of silence followed his plea with just the gentle slap of water on stone to interrupt it. It was the young spiral from the group that broke the stalemate, coming forward to get a closer look at the golem. His ice-white eyes seemed to pierce the deep blue of the fae's and for a second time he was filled with doubt. These visitors didn't seem like they meant any harm; after all, they hadn't attacked him even despite him being in a clearly weakened state.

"How long have you been here?" the spiral eventually asked, his voice carefully controlled although his eyes sparked with curiosity. Uncertain, the fae kept quiet. Another moment passed and then the spiral continued. "Must have been a pretty long time for you to be so rusted. Why don't we spend a few days here, just the four of us, so that you can see we mean no harm?" He tipped his head to the side and rested back on his haunches, scrunching up a bit like an inch worm. He was clearly in no hurry; he seemed ready to wait however long it took.

The spiral's demeanor had eased a bit of the fae's uneasiness. Even so, it was several long minutes before the golem dipped his head in agreement, and a smile immediately stretched across the spiral's face.

"I'm Topaz."

"...Aeris."

After a period of adjustment, Aeris took it upon himself to serve as sentry. He was slow-moving at first, his joints worse for wear, but with a little help from the forgemaster, he was soon up and moving around more efficiently. Still slow, but at least the caves were no longer filled with the groans of his grinding movements.

It was longer still before he warmed up to his newly adopted Clan. Few liked to speak to him--there was nothing that could be done for his voice--but he enjoyed listening to the others talk. After ages of just the sound of water to fill his ears, the quiet murmurs of the clan was a nice change. This was what made it easier for him to feel integrated into the clan.

“I have been feeling very clearheaded lately and what
I want to write about today
is the sea. It contains so
many colors. Silver at dawn,
green at noon, dark blue in
the evening. Sometimes it
looks almost red. Or it will
turn the color of old coins.
Right now the shadows of
clouds are dragging across it,
and patches of sunlight are
touching down everywhere.
White strings of gulls drag
over it like beads.

It is my favorite thing, I
think, that I have ever seen.
Sometimes I catch myself
staring at it and forget my
duties. It seems big enough
to contain everything anyone
could ever feel.”

We Cannot See
