It's a truism that dragons love treasure but none quite so much as Meade. The clan's treasure keeper, he guards every coin, gem, and valuable with zealous care. With his gleaming, gemlike red scales and his sparkling, golden belly, he could almost be a part of their treasure trove himself. He certainly seems to spend all his time in their vault, sometimes even sleeping there. Many a dragon hoping to sneak a little extra spending money or a pretty bauble has been caught by surprise when what seemed to be a pile of treasure stood up and demanded to know what they were doing. Although at first glance the treasure in the vault seems to have been piled haphazardly, Meade actually keeps it very carefully arranged. The tempting piles of coins and small valuables near the front are kept where they can be easily grabbed when needed, and where they'll distract potential thieves from going deeper inside, where he keeps the real valuables. He keeps everything carefully sorted and counted as a matter of pride, and can locate any specific thing in an instant. Some of the clan have speculated that their treasure hoard might be the guardian's charge. However, he seems to find the question insulting, snarling that it doesn't need to be his charge for him to do his job well. In truth, he doesn't like to talk about his most prized possession, a large ruby which he wears on him at all times. It was stolen from him once, by an enterprising thief who'd heard him bragging about it. He wouldn't have gotten it back if not for the aid of a clan just as well versed in thievery, among other other things. In return, he agreed to guard their treasure, and keep a careful account of their payment from the other jobs they carried out. None of the other dragons in the clan at the time had a head for figures, and the clan accounts were largely a matter of guesswork. But the careful tasks and meticulous accounting came naturally to the exacting, tidy-minded guardian. Meade has a tendency to come off as gruff and intimidating, but that's mostly because he has very little patience for people bothering him while he's working. And he's almost always working. But for those dragons who don't come down to the vault pestering him about how they reeeally need some treasure to go buy a new set of silks, he might show a slightly more personable side. After he's watched them for a few visits to make sure they're not just sneakily trying to get their claws on his, er, the clan's treasure, that it. But provided they behave, he enjoys a little socializing. Because he rarely leaves the vault, he's quite receptive to hearing stories about the clan's latest jobs or adventures. He stores those up too, just as carefully as the treasure, and never forgets a detail. ~by Mirrorstone |
