She watches another young blood say goodbye to his family, and to his friends, and to his home. The routine is the same every day, every morning, every night, and it wears on her more and more with every rerun. I’ll see you when you get back, says a mother to her son. You’re going to do great. We’re all so proud. Be safe. Come back soon. Be safe. Come back. Please come back.

Afterwards, Ariadne sends them her sorrow in the form of flowers and gemstones and letters from loved ones, laid out by the creek each dawn and each dusk. A gift and a prayer, and she returns to her duties. Some nights, she turns her back on the sun setting over the memorial's glassy water setting. The spirits of the lost paint words in the clouds, and the screams pierce through to her weary bones. Why did I let them go? She can never find an answer that quells the guilt, only stifle it for a small passage of time before she begins with the next cluster of young dragons looking to serve.

Other nights it’s all she can do to lull herself to sleep in the arms of someone who doesn’t know what to tell her anymore.
