Triton only heard two things about the Mire in his adolescence. Dragons die in the mire, and its nothing but polids, toridae, psywurms and kamaitachi. Unconvinced of that being all that was in the mire, he worked tirelessly to be considered strong enough to expedition into the mire.

According to a battered little journal he keeps, there is more there. Lionlike turtles. Enormous wartoads. And a lot of mud.

The aggressive toridae and kamaitachi prefer aiming for his eyes, it seems. After the fourth painful trip that brought him home nearly blinded, Triton invested his meager treasure funds from his loot brought home to buy a pair of enchanted goggles. They protect his eyes with a small barrier. He wasn't a tundra after all, able to practically see with his nose.

When the call went out to find Whirlwind recruits, Triton took the entry test, accepted with open arms. Lightning dragons they said could handle being blasted by a brilliant psywurm. He didn't know why until it hit him face first with a bolt of light.
