Contest entry

The snow fell at the foot of the mountain, making layers of powder a witness to the deer's crossing. It wobbled carefully on long, thin legs as it looked around for danger. Snow fell from a nearby tree and it ran away, too skittish to notice the source of its scare.

A squirrel sat on the branch, cleaning itself. It had just eaten, and its tummy was round form the feast. A single acorn was resting beside it, above the empty shells that had been shuffled down along with the snow. The squirrel jumped over to the mountainside and climbed a little up. Not to the snow-covered top of course, just enough meters up that no one else would look for it. The squirrel buried the acorn deep into the fur of the mountainside, and clapped it neatly in place so no one would notice.

For the mountain was a dragon with long, spotted fur, that made it resemble a mountain. Its great size made the other animals seem like ants, and so they thought him a giant rock. But his fur was soft and warm, though layered with snowy white on the meet, mane and snout. The animals knew this, but they did not fear him as they might, as he ate plants just like them. They had never heard the term "dragon".
