Many call her the Deceptive Oracle for reasons unknown. Perhaps for the way she hides her face beneath her mask, or for the way her feathers have been dyed with colors not naturally her own. Some say it's because of the way she starkly defends the Lapidian Demigods and Spiritual realm, claiming her preaching and words are just plain folk tales. Either way, many dragons, both acquaintances and strangers alike, believe that the Oracle Scorch has something to hide. That she may not be what she seems.

However, those closest to Scorch, members of the High Council of the Lapidians, know that those rumors are the furthest from the truth. Scorch is one of the most honest dragons they known, and a poor soul who had lost everything in the Catastrophe. She was once a young lass that had a promising future as a scribe and an artist, a knack for remembering a scene or dragon in great detail and recreate them in great detail down to the smallest little nick in a time-weathered scale. Scorch's work was so skillfully done that it quickly gained popularity, and she was set to become the apprentice of the current royal court's artist in the old clan, but a few short days before Scorch was to be formally recognized as an apprentice of the royal court, the Catastrophe began.

During the attack that ended the old clan, Scorch's eyesight was taken from her. Agents of the Shade had hit her with acid, burning her face and eyes beyond repair. With luck, the prince Thamadi, the young prince she had befriended weeks before, had come to her rescue, whisking her and others away to safety before the Shade could kill them. When Scorch came to, she quickly realized she was blinded. She mourned for her lost eyesight, now unable to observe the scenes and dragons she had come to love, unable to paint or write about them any longer.

However, the Gods had seen what had happened, that Scorch had dedicated her life to her craft and in a matter of hours it had all been torn away from her. Not even the Gods could repair her stolen eyesight, but they could offer a replacement. They bestowed upon Scorch a gift - the gift to perceive the spiritual realm. When Scorch had hit her lowest point, the gift became known to her. She could see auras, here whispers from the Beyond. Both Spirit Guides and Lost Souls became known to her, could speak to her.

With this new ability, and a renewed purpose, Scorch motioned to erect the shrine that became the center of the Lapidian clan. A sanctuary for free worship and peace among the living and the spirits, and a home for her and others seeking refuge. Representatives of the orthodox Gods flocked to the shrine, to give the words of their Flights, while Scorch stayed in the shadows, keeping the Shrine and watching the auras of the living and spirits, ensuring the safety of those who found refuge in the Shrine.

The Gate had been a surprise to Scorch, popping up one day in the depths of the Shrine. For years, Scorch had felt the immense spiritual energy that had moved beneath the Shrine, which was part of the reason she had asked the Shrine be erected here, but she had never expected it to break to the surface, to manifest into a portal to the other realm. Deep within Scorch's quarters it had manifested, and she could hear the whispers of the souls in the beyond.

Then, as quickly it had appeared, it had closed, going dormant. However, Scorch knew this wasn't permanent. No, she could still feel the ebb and flow of the spiritual ley-lines beneath. It was merely biding time, gathering energy to open again. Scorch wondered why the Gate had chosen here to open, chosen her quarters. She theorized that it was because she made these grounds a sacred place for worship to the deities and spirit guides of the clan, maybe the Veil knew that such a portal would be protected here by those who spoke sacred words.

However, such gate brought the attention of an organization that dabbled into the affairs of the spirits. Whisperings of a group called the Veiled Phoenix had reached Scorch as she cared for the Shrine. They were searching for the Gate that, even though Scorch had never told a soul about, they claimed was essential to their operations. A few members had eventually sought Scorch out, telling her their motives and the reason they were searching for the Gate.

Scorch didn't trust them at first. Such a Gate couldn't be trifled with, she knew this. For the sake of the spirits Scorch could communicate with and those who worshiped at her Shrine, Scorch had been reluctant to let the Veiled Phoenix operatives in. She had vowed to protect this place from anyone who would do it harm. So the Veiled Phoenix asked her to join them as a Grui - a member of their group that would keep souls in her shrine, keep them soothed and calm, and then when the Gate opened she would guide them through to the beyond. She would be taught the ways of creating and storing the vessels that would house the souls, and the ways to control and care for the gates. To keep her clan, and the spirits, safe, Scorch agreed.

The Night of No Return - The Aftermath wrote:
To wake up, but see nothing.

That is what Scorch experienced.

She had no idea what had happened. One minute she was trying to escape the siege and the next the worst, searing pain was burning her eyes.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't do more to save your vision," A gentle voice said softly as the feathers and antennae were brushed away from her face. "The damage was too much, the best I could do was to scar your wounds over to prevent further damage."

"Oceanspire...." Scorch's voice squeaked softly. "So that's it? I'll never see again?" She sobbed softly. "I'll never be able to paint or write, ever again?"

"I'm so sorry, Scorch," Oceanspire said.

Silent tears leaked from Scorch's non-seeing eyes. To have her gift of sight taken from her, to be forced to give up her passion against her will. For a fleeting moment, she wondered if she would be better off dead.

At that moment, that fleeting thought, suddenly Scorch saw the lights dancing around her. She could see Oceanspire sitting next to her, except it wasn't Oceanspire, but her soul, her aura. A peaceful turquoise that matched the beauty of Ocean's outward appearance. Then, she saw others. Others she knew were from their clan. And then one bright white one she had never seen before....
