"QUOTE OR SONG LYRIC"

History:

"Plants? Water plants? Plants in the water? Don't be ridiculous. Make yourself useful and start helping out with your father's business. You're more than old enough to be collecting stones for him to sell. You know that the customers are dumb as rocks; You could be thinking up schemes for Ren. Ways to trick the dragons that buy things from him. Instead you flop around, embarrassing me, being lazy and doing nothing all day while your brother works, works, works. Alby knows his place. He's a fine young dragon. You, on the other talon, are just a disappointment. Quite the disappointment, too. You just drag your weight around territory all day, probably just sittin' 'round in the best sunspots, taking up space. We ain't callin' you 'Ducky' for nuttin', you know."

Ducky knew that what her mother said about her being lazy wasn't true. She helped her clan mates whenever the opportunity rose, and she didn't lug her 'weight' around, flop, or take up space on the rocks that the elder dragons used for sunning. She paused her angry thoughts to recall a line in a poem she had read about the Sunbeam Ruins before- The rays of light, they never cease/ To tickle scales and warm old knees. Completely lost in the perfect rhymes and flowing verses of the poem, she sat down, closed her eyes, and recited the whole poem to herself out loud. "The sunbeams spill across the ground, the rays of light are finally found-" She was interrupted by a loud guffaw.

"That's real nice, Ducky!" Alby cried gleefully. "And when will you stop talking to yourself? Maybe when they find those rays of light! Ha!" Ducky. Oh, how she loathed that nickname. It sparked a sort of anger inside her. Of course, those sparks never lasted for long; Ducky was, for the most part, an easy-going dragon. Still, it brought her shame everywhere she went. She felt as though the wind in the reeds and the singing of the birds were always teasing her- Ducky, Ducky, Ducky duck! Ducky, Ducky, Ducky! She didn't waddle like a duck or look like one in any way. Even her clan mates, who did not resent her as her mother and her brother did (although they did think of her as exceptionally odd), called her by that horrid name. The nickname did not define her. Her real name was was Lucy. But despite her requests, she was only ever called 'Ducky' by her fellow dragons.

Her clan mates did not mean to offend her, she knew that. But it disheartened her, still, every time she heard the word 'Ducky' tossed around.

Lucy (let's call her that for the time-being) had always dreamed of living somewhere else, somewhere she'd be accepted. The Wind flight, perhaps. Or the Water flight, where she would certainly have lots of options of where to plant her beloved leafy greens. Somewhere. Somewhere else. She rocked back and forth and thought of the poems she'd read about the Wind flight and the Water flight. The stories. The paintings. They all depicted tall green bamboo and teasing gentle breezes, or the blue-green waves and salty sea spray. Those places seemed so much more adventurous. So vivid. So bright. A future so close, just at her clawtips... But only if Lucy had the courage to take the next step.

Thinking about it now, she wished that she had never told her mother. She surely would tell Ren, and soon the whole clan would be whispering about the odd dragon that wanted to plant things in the water.

Lucy had just wanted to help people... To bring dragons joy when they saw her beautiful plants. To feed her clan. Her new clan, anyway. When she ran away. Yes, it was no longer a matter of if. Lucy had to go. She could feel it in her bones, a wanting for a new world.
