Daughter of Misfortune - Storysinger - Drowned Sailor Walking
“Since then, at an uncertain hour, / That agony returns: / And till my ghastly tale is told, / This heart within me burns.” ― Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Rime is one of the sadder sights in the House of Echidna. This spirit can often be found wandering the hallways, singing softly to herself even when she thinks nobody is around. Though the words and melodies change, the songs are always about her tragic final voyage, and she will sing them to any visitors willing to listen. The story goes something like this: In her life, Rime was a sailor. Maybe she was a captain, or a pirate, or a stowaway. All she remembers with absolute certainty is that there was once a time when she loved the sea. In her last days she was on a ship travelling waters thick with glacial ice, though she does not remember from where she departed or where she was bound. The tragedy that strikes Rime's crew changes with her every telling, her memories shifting like the surf in a storm. Did she kill a blessed albatross, or fall for a siren's song? Did she start a mutiny, or suffer one? Did she anger a god of the sea, or entrance a goddess of death? Was there an iceberg or a kraken, or a storm spotted too late while she was sleeping at the watch? She remembers the story a hundred ways in as many days, each version feeling as real as the last. The only constant that remains is her guilt. In every version, it is her mistakes alone that doom her crew. They all die before her each time, slipping beneath icy waves or into the waiting jaws of a monster. In the end, inevitably, she is alone when she faces Death for his judgement. It is this specter of Death that curses her to wander the world a ghost, telling her story. Only when her sins are fully and truthfully confessed will she be allowed to return to her beloved sea, and to the eternal rest she'll find beneath its waves. However, her twisting memory ensures that her testimony is always somewhere between incomplete and impossible. Still she tries, giving voice to every false memory until the truth can be found. She's haunted by misfortune, the bad luck she brings getting worse the longer she goes without trying to confess. This is one of the reasons she has settled in the House of Echidna. Among all of the House's chaos, it's difficult to blame Rime's curse for any particular disaster. Rime's bad luck and perpetual state of mourning make it hard for other dragons to be around her for long stretches of time. Yet she has an uncanny instinct for the beautiful, and those that have the heart to become frequent listeners will adamantly defend her talent as a poet and a composer. The company of these admirers does seem to bolster Rime, though her melancholy never lifts much. It's said that she's secretly written several songs that aren't about drowning, beautiful songs to only be revealed when she has finally returned to the sea. But who's to say if that's true?
