The board shifts as a gilded hand wraps around a chess piece. Millions of strategies put into play at once; aggressive to eliminate his opponent's king, passive to defend his own, and deceptive, to lure his foe into a trap so he can capture the pieces one by one. It was never enough, and would it ever be? Epochs, the ones that had meshed together to form him, a being carved from darkness and gold, flashed by and he couldn't help but close his eyes; couldn't help but embrace the memories of the times when he was victorious, when he could wear his moniker with pride, when his mind wasn't clouded with thoughts of fading ink and cryptic ruins. As he looked across the chessboard once more, a field of blackened iron and polished ivory, his eyes narrowed. A smirk graced his lips, dangerously immoral and teeth far to sharp to be mortal, Zenith laughed. He moved the figure in his claw to the opposite side, and at that moment, he understood. The most frightening beings were not those borne from boiled blood and wrath; they were those who had cunning minds, full of strategies and ideas ripe for use, waiting to be carried into battle. Picking a side could only lead to one's demise, and as his adversary would discover, the chagrin of defeat was not easily dismissed. Checkmate. | .................... |
