BIOGRAPHY
Marigold is deeply fond of her wife, Gothwife, though many dragons have commented on their obvious differences. Despite the disparity in personality and conduct, the two are very much in love. To other members of the clan, Marigold often comes off as unapproachable or conceited, due to her ethereal presentation and status as Awakened. She doesn't particularly discourage this, and in fact rather enjoys being thought of as mysterious, but is often annoyed by the frequency with which other dragons become cagey around her when she asks sincere questions. Her quest for knowledge is earnest, and Marigold seeks out information wherever she can, not just books and scrolls, and will happily listen to a dragon recount a story from the past that is relevant to her current area of study. |
FEVER IN THE LIBRARY
The wildclaw in the doorway crossed her forelegs indignantly. Her tail flicked, underscoring her clear irritation towards the other dragon in the room, whose crystalline hide scattered a refracted sunset across the walls. With an impatient flap of her wings, Gothwife leapt lightly over haphazardly stacked scrolls and landsliding books to land at her mate's side. Marigold jerked her head up from the scroll she had been examining, pulled out of her trance at the arrival of her girlfriend. "Oh," she said, voice hoarse from lack of use. She'd been without visitors all day, left to immerse herself in her studies, and the time sincerely had escaped her. Her aching neck turned towards the floor-to-ceiling window that occupied one face of the library, and the grand vista of orange and scarlet that heralded the setting sun seemed to finally bring her back to the present moment. "Oh! Oh, gods, I'm so sorry. I didn't realise..." she stuttered, pushing herself to her feet. "Stars and stones, Goth, I had no idea what time it was." Despite a petulant pout on her muzzle, Gothwife held out a claw to help her mate stand. "I know you get caught up in all of this, and I love that you're so enthusiastic about it! But you promised we'd go hunting together, and all the good prey'll be back in their dens by now." The ice-eyed dragon couldn't keep the whining edge from her voice - this was a routine occurrence, Marigold's long hours in the library, poring over old texts and accounts, searching for inconsistencies that could lead to generations-hidden secrets. The wildclaw's hunger for knowledge was second to none that Gothwife had ever met, and that earnest desire to understand the world and all its truths was part of what she loved about her mate so much. At times like this, though, it seemed a much less endearing trait. "I know, heart," Marigold said, shamefaced. "I just... I found something, in the old wildclaw annals, and it reminded me of some news I heard recently, and it all felt so - you know when you read something, a word, and it feels like - you were meant to find it?" Her words started to run together, shaky and excited, and Gothwife tilted her head in confusion. She'd certainly heard her partner wax rhapsodic about ancient stories before, but those were always spoken of in far more measured tones, a more logical form of enrapturement. This was closer to a fever. Marigold's claws started to shake. Gothwife's gaze softened. "Baby, you've been working too hard," she said, chalking the golden wildclaw's state up to a lack of sleep and too much reading. "Come back to the den. I'll catch us something, and then we can both get some rest." Her tail brushed comfortingly down Marigold's hindlegs. "I... I - darling, Goth, dearest, I feel like I'm about to make a momentous discovery," Marigold stuttered. "I can - you heard the gossip, right? The wildclaw in the Shrieking Wilds, the one who everyone says trails overgrowth like a cometstream, when - the green lights, the sound that everyone heard. You know? Everyone was talking about it, saying the rumours must have been exaggerated, that it's wishful thinking for a new Age, that - or, some, some of them, some dragons and I won't name names because information is information no matter how loosely a source regards the truth, some of them saying it is a new age. That it's an - a fantastic - Awakening." Marigold's rant grew steadily in volume and frenzy, the gold dragon pacing with anxiety and barely-contained desperate excitement. Her mate took a few steps backwards, worrying at the sight of her beloved so enthralled by this topic, not knowing what to do or say to calm the flames that seemed to have caught in her heart. At the final word - that breathless, wide-eyed proclamation of Awakening- a shudder seemed to run down the length of Marigold's sinuous spine, her crest raising and a shiver chasing the scales to the tip of her tailfeathers. The light, already cascading across the room from Marigold's reflective form, spun crazily. And then - Marigold blinked - Her mouth fell open in astonishment - And an all-consuming golden light filled the room. |
