The Dark Ones | Rusalka, Rusalka

______In the shadow of Moonkeep's eastern wall, a woman lives in the well. You can't see her when you're awake.

She sings, or so the sleepwalkers say. Rusalka is what the ghosts in the hallways and stairwells whisper amongst themselves, and they do not befriend her. The well stands half hidden in the leaves of nightflowers, and rumor is that if you drop a stone into its mouth you will never hear it hit the water. If you listen closely though, you just might hear the ocean.

The sleepwalkers say her voice is like that of angels, of sirens. It is so hard to sleep soundly with a heavy heart. I understand, she whispers. But there is only darkness down here with me. Nightmares would never torment you again. You can sleep so well, forever.

Moonkeep's ghosts cannot discredit her. They know the secrets of many things, but eternal rest is not one of them. To wake is a gift, they remind sleepers instead. You only get to do it so many times. What we wouldn't give for one more. The wandering unconscious are raw emotion, vulnerable to temptations but receptive to passionate appeals as well.

The ghosts make a compelling argument, to most.

The woman in the well still sings.
