‹━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━«
They were created out of an ill fated affair, but that never meant that they were unloved, quite the opposite really, if asked, Nahbi would have described his childhood as perfect. Filled with love, with an attentive mother, all the toys he could have asked for and just the same went for whatever attention a child could demand. The only thing that was off, was the loss of his voice. It happened when he was still very small, not longer a toddler, but still too young to witness such an incident. He walked in on his mother hurting a woman that looked just like him. There was red everywhere and his mother looked so cold and hard, nothing like the tender, loving woman he had known. The injured woman screamed his name, called for his attention, only for her voice to die in a terrible gurgle as his mother finished what she had begun. Unlike any other child that might had cried upon such a scene, Nahbi simply smiled lovingly and pure at Lytta, asked if she would read him another bedtime story. He got the additional story that night, when he turned his back on the woman that gave birth to him, in favor of striving for another woman’s love. And he had done it so easily, which was only one of the many first signs of what could happen in the future. That night, Nahbi went to sleep with a voice and woke up with a sore throat and his voice gone. No sound would leave his lips and when he cried over the loss of his voice, Lytta was there to dry his tears and comfort him. Living without a voice was not as hard as Nahbi had imagined it, quite the opposite, people tended to become careless around him, spilling information they should not. It was that what woke Nahbi’s interest in secrets, in manipulation and the whispers of hidden threats. Even without a voice to speak, Nahbi still managed to control his snakes, to make them obey and spy on other people, while he sat in the shadows, writing every single secret down with a smile on his lips. The snakes were loyal, they listened to his thoughts, his mental voice that screamed inside his skull and yet went unheard by any other dragon. At least that was before he appeared. Nahbi had never met someone like him before and started so boringly normal too as he sat in the throne room, watching his mother knighting some random warrior, while writing down the chores Sphinx had given him in order of further his training as a spymaster. Nahbi nearly dropped his quill when the Wildclaw spun around once his mother was done, went straight towards the prince and then - did something entirely unexpected. He had half heartedly expected an attack, instead Apollyon knelt down in front of him, eyes filled with such devotion that Nahbi’s breath was taken away for a moment, the Wildclaw begged for the honor of becoming his personal guard, something which his mother kindly let him decide. And of course the prince could not say no to the prospect of a personal toy soldier to play with. After accepting Apollyon at his side, the Wildclaw once more surprised him in answering a sarcastic thought aimed at him, causing Nahbi to freeze in surprise. Could it be? Could it really be? Was Apollyon able to hear his mental voice? The only one he had left? Nahbi nearly cried when Apollyon nodded, he hugged the man, kissed him in a rush of excitement, before he pushed him away again. Beside finding out that Apollyon could understand him, Nahbi also found something interesting out. Apollyon was utterly and completely loyal, like his snakes, he loved Nahbi, a motion that was slowly returned. However, like it was Nahbi’s entire personality, he was not clear about this, played and toyed with Apollyon, made him chase after every single, stolen kiss, every lingering touch, every gaze. The only time where he openly showed affection towards his bodyguard was, when his mother declared that she had found a fiancee for him, a graceful skydancer from a large, rich clan. Nahbi hated her instantly, turned towards his mother with the silent plea to let him instead have Apollyon as a mate. And merciful as his mother was, she said that the marriage was for connections alone, what happened in private was no one’s business. To humiliate Dara into her place, Nahbi glared at her, before kissing Apollyon passionately, making very clear how little he liked her, was merely tolerating her. Things however, were not about to settle down, instead their family was hit with yet another hit of cahnge, during a dinner together, a sickingly good mood reached around, spread like a contagious disease, it was too good to be true. And it wasn't. As his sister, courageous Jun, was missing and when their mother shared the good news, he knew why. And Nahbi understood perfectly. He, unlike his foolish brother Karal, saw the reason behind it all. And he couldn't care less about Jun anyways. Nahbi didn’t knew if he should laugh or sigh over his brother’s thoughtless decision to turn towards the supernatural of all things for help. In the end, he felt a bit of pity for Karal, but not enough to entirely stopped his mind games he was playing with every sibling of his. |
