Biography
Kynareth
Within Kynareth's mind and body there is a perpetual internal conflict. Tracing her heritage of the Mirror dragon species back to the Abiding Boneyard of the Scarred Wasteland - she is confronted with the horror and disgust of contemplating allegiance to the Plaguebringer.
Having burst into existence in the Everbloom Gardens of the Viridian Labyrinth, she has no knowledge or memory of her parents and as such believes that she may have formed entirely from the bountiful soil of Nature itself - owing, therefore, not only her allegiance but her very life to the Gladekeeper.
Something deep inside of Kynareth tells her that whether this pet theory is true or not - the Gladekeeper is her choice and one that cannot be shaken loose from the coiled roots of decision. Kynareth is one of the anomalies of her species, preferring seclusion from other dragons by choice - not only other dragon species but other dragons altogether.
In spite of Kynareth's conflicted feelings and resultant anxieties, she is clear-headed and reserved - preferring in most situations to quietly observe and analyse before making a well-calculated response. Behind this quiet and contemplative demeanour, however, there is a burning ambition to see the force of 'unbridled life' transform her own offspring and its lineage into an abundant force of its own, coursing throughout the Labyrinth like the great roots of the Behemoth itself.
Kynareth acknowledges the Unknown as an important guiding force in her life and that of the Lucanidae Clan. Anything bound up in enigma and mystery is taken as a good omen.
The Lucanidae Clan : Meeting of the Progenitors
Luscious fields of everflowing green fill a landscape with curling winds that carry pollen and aroma from green to fertile green. A constant hum of insects battles a sonorous and chaotic garden of birdsong, everything grows outwardly from a massive, spiring tower of life. The Behemoth sits at the centre of a pulsating, breathing ecosystem, so full with life that it seems to breathe with discernible inhaling and exhaling. The Viridian Labyrinth's pulsating seems to synchronise with the rhythm of a beating heart.
...
As Kynareth stirred in her sleep, these airy dreams of peaceful tranquility faltered. The skull of a bird among the detritus of decomposing insects and vegetation sparked into vision like a vein of lightning tearing through the sightless sky - in a horrifying illumination, the pulsing growth of life of the Everbloom, and all of the Viridian Labyrinth before her, began to desynchronise with the beating of a heart. Slowing to an off-kilter swinging mechanism that sputters and decays towards total silence - soon the growth of life was visceral and viral in nature, soon her visions of everflowing green were stolen and replaced with a bleak mess of putrid flesh-like landscape whose breath was uneven and marked with death.
Kynareth's eyelids lifted quickly and all four eyes gazed reassuringly at a warm blue sky filled with lukewarm daylight and moving currents of fresh air, free from all pustulent plague. Slowly her racing heart stilled and as she collected herself she saw the Guardian approaching from afar. She silently watched as he drew closer and closer, something about his stride showed purpose in spite of all his obvious caution and worry.
"Are you ... Kynareth?"
"How do you know that?"
"Many moons ago now, I was sent a vision in my dreams, a strange root-like emblem emblazoned upon the sky in vivid green lights of aurora. Later in my travels I came across an aging scholar on his death-bed, I showed him my best impression of this emblem and he told me this was a Sigil like no other he had seen but that it belonged to a Nature clan. Seven days passed and visions returned to me, your likeness and the whispered words of 'Kynareth' and 'Lucanidae' stirred me into waking breath. I have been scouring the Virdian Labyrinth for you since. We are to found the Nature Clan of Lucanidae and I am to live and abide by your command as leader of this clan: you are my charge, Kynareth."
Kynareth had felt a strange tingling since the Guardian had mentioned the word 'Lucanidae' and was unable to explain the feeling to herself. She searched herself for some hidden memory of this feeling and found nothing, met with such a mystery, her very being began to beam in utter tranquil delight. In the face of an unknown that should be so abysmally frightful she felt only wonder and endless butterflies. She stared with focus and yet her mind wandered.
"My name is Balthazar."
"Yes... and Lucanidae... I know this name somehow, but I cannot explain the knowledge."
"Perhaps you have dreamt of it also? We do not always remember our dreams, they are not always filled with visions of meaning and purpose."
"I think I would remember this, if it were so meaningful? This feels different. Not the cloudy memory of dream but... like a song sung to me in childhood, one for which I can only remember the tuneful notes of melody. But I fail to grasp and keep hold of any words."
"Perhaps this song has no words."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Maybe we should embrace the unknown."
At this, something clicked deep inside. Kynareth held Balthazar's gaze for many hours as the stillness was occasionally interrupted with a sweeping wind and the clouds passed slowly above them. After these slow and serene hours, the two left the peaceful clearing where they had met and set towards a path surrounded by densely enclosing trees and shrubbery. The path led towards the lesser lairs of the Everbloom Gardens, not far from Kynareth's earliest memories, she saw them laid out before her on their spiralling journey. Balthazar saw only new sights but before him were laid out the ghostly images of events that were yet to transpire - among them all, he saw the innumerable children of the Lucanidae Clan, and he smiled.
