Hatched night of the winter solstice,
Despite what his name suggests, he is not an exceptional chess player.
Though a mischievous magician, he isn't evil. He just finds it quite amusing to cause trouble for other dragons. Checkmate is a very cunning fellow and an expert magician - he loves disappearing acts, mind reading, and his specialty, card tricks. That said, he is not capable of harnessing true potent magic, and as aggravating as he can be, will avoid violence and provoking hostility. His teeth and claws as weapons are reserved for feeding, emergencies, and magic tricks. He is eager to learn and picks up skills astonishingly quickly; his curiosity is detered only by the entertainment annoyance provides.
However, if a prank goes too far and hurts a fellow dragon, Checkmate has been known to express remorse. Still, he seems quick to recover. His ultimate pride and joy is stimulating reactions from dragons and looping them: if one reacts with annoyance, he works to make them more annoyed, and likewise, if one acts impressed or intrigued, he will work to further excite his audience. For this reason, he is especially popular among hatchlings.
He works alone now, but speaks from time to time about a past partner in crime.
It seems his cat's name is Good. Maybe she's always feline good.
