"Harken! O Alala, daughter of Polemos! Prelude of spears! To whom soldiers are sacrificed for their city’s sake in the holy sacrifice of death." Alala was the female personification of the war cry in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Polemos, the daemon of war. She was an attendant of the war god Ares, whose war cry was her name. Greek soldiers attacked the enemy with this battle cry in order to cause panic to the enemy lines. It is reputed to be derived from the horrific sound owls make. -- Her laughter is joyful and terrible - the sort of sound which might drive one mad, if one were to listen for too long. She knows she was not meant to exist, and that the fact of her conception is a miracle, or an abomination, depending on who is asked. But how could she not feel joy, knowing that she came into the world against such seemingly-insurmountable odds? Why should she not take pleasure in living every day in a world where she was never meant to live at all? The feeling of the sunshine warming her skin, the voices of her clan mates talking and singing, the scent of the wide salty sea, the taste of grapes bursting between her teeth - how blissful, how lovely. Sometimes the force of her sustained attention causes items to disappear, almost as if they had never existed at all, from not only the physical plane of the world, but from the memories of most of the clan, as well. Those who understand more of the world than what their five senses can tell them know of this strange power. There is a nexus which surrounds Alala, a twist in the fabric of existence - almost as if a rock was dropped the ocean, in the sense that the ripples of her particular twist continue to spread outward. She loves her clan, and some worry that her love for her clan is too much - that she might begin to consume even other dragons, if she grows strong enough. Certainly Meilinoe is aware of this; anyone who wishes to raise a complaint against Alala must go through her first, and considering the list of dragons who are aware of Alala's burgeoning power is quite short indeed, it seems unlikely that such discontent would ever be expressed. Those who are observant enough may note that Alala lacks a shadow. |
