In some ways, being a mother is easy when you're a dragon. Many define it has just having an egg that hatched, and nothing more. And for the longest time, Aloha couldn't even get that right. Eggs that never hatched, hatchlings that never survived long enough to be named. Everyone said it wasn't her fault, but it was. She was the only common thread between all them.

In her old clan, no one sympathized with her. Some even said she should know better by now. And perhaps they were right. But she couldn't take the hushed gossip and pitied looks. So she left. Aloha found a new family, and then had a nest that survived. Doe was part of that nest. The other hatchlings grew up and left, as hatchings tend to do. But Doe fell in love, and chose to stay. She wandered the land with Vess, but she would always come back home. Until she didn't.

Aloha always knew that Doe was quiet and strange, even morbid. But with Vess returned after the breakup crying about how Doe had "taken things too far", she didn't know what to think. But she was there for Vess, and Doe hadn't come back.

Doe still hasn't come back, and Aloha's given up on being a parent. Now she ignores that pain and is the friendly hippie that all the hatchlings adore.
