Biography
ISKANDAR
━━ devoted | nostalgic | forlorn |
Like all members of his kind, he was drawn to his charge like a magnet, like a moth to a flame. He followed his impulses out from his home in the empire of light and into the dead heat of the wasteland. When he first saw him, finally, after years of searching, it was in the thick violent heat of conquest and he was fury and power and terror and beauty. Blood on his hands and teeth and sword in his hand and violence in his eyes that were like pitiless bright-burning suns and he knew then, knew what he was, what he meant, and what he meant was everything in the world. Iskandar fell to his knees like a supplicant, raised his trembling hands up as an offering. He was sneering and thankless. My guardian Sunder had spat, as if I’m a weak thing, that needs guarding. Pitiless words, like teeth, like knives. But he took him nonetheless, my loyal servant and Iskandar has trailed after ever since, desperate, giving everything and still not enough, never enough.

A loyal, sad-eyed thing, like a good dog with a bad master, or a forgotten toy, broken and discarded. Long ago he made two mistakes: he loved his charge and he loved a heartless thing. Everything after has been longing and pain and quiet desperation. Self-immolation. There is little left now of what he once was, little more than the husk of a loyal soldier, a longing lover. This place has all but forgotten him, even as he still guards what remains of the thing he loved, the thing he still loves with desperate hope, in spite of everything. It's a pity really; even now, after everything, he still hasn't learned. But oh, they had never warned him it would be like this. Such a mad heedless want, savage and burning.
There is nothing left here now, nothing that matters; the drums are silenced, the velvet is rotting, the gold and ivory covered with choking dust. Even now, now that Sunder has been consumed and shattered beyond all recognition, dethroned and degenerated into a mad vengeful beast and all but totally destroyed - even now, Iskandar still loves. The rest have all forgotten. The soldiers, the lovers, the followers, even the enemies - gone. They don't care anymore. And all the power and fury abandoned, crumbled into dust, nothing but quiet still emptiness in their place. Alone, Iskandar can never forget, never leave. So instead he remains, tends to what is left, minds the tomb and lights the candles. It brings him small, strange comfort. To serve. It's all he's ever done.

Unrequited love: Sunder
Charge: Sunder Friends: Anathema Enemies: Reynard; has an uneasy rivalry with Reliquary Familiar: Jakk, Greybeak Reaper. Another lost wanderer in the shade-stained temple complex. Religion: Follower of the Lightweaver. Unlike many residents of the Garden, he loathes the Shade for what it did to Sunder, and despises its puppets, summoners, and avatars (especially Threnody, who orchestrated his destruction and is unapologetic about the results) Name Meaning: Arabic, Indonesian and Malay form of Alexander, which meant "defending men" from Greek αλεξω (alexo) "to defend, help" and ανηρ (aner) "man". Surname: Sadik, from the Turkish word sadik meaning "loyal". Sexuality: Bisexual Faction: The garden Human appearance: Tall, powerfully built. Has short dark hair. His eyes are blind with cataracts. Extra information: After Sunder's destruction he sheared away his beard, the ritual Guardian sign of the shame and grief of losing a charge. In a fit of horror and agony he also forced Anathema to focus all of his light magic on his face, leaving him permanently sun-blind. His heavy blindfold has tassels and pale jewels sewn into its lower edge, symbolically representing teardrops. Despite everything he still clings desperately to the idea that Sunder can somehow be fixed and returned to his former glory. Won't admit it but dreams that if he can find a way to restore Sunder the cruel prince will finally love him back. Has a tense relationship with Reliquary. Iskandar envies the attention Reliquary received from Sunder in life, even if it was an obviously loveless marriage of convenience. He also despises the fact that she has taken control in Sunder's stead when he is still, in Iskandar's hopeful, deluded mind, cognizant and able to lead. |
