━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“I swear, if I have to keep saving you from stupid thugs like this, I’ll murder you myself.” Magina whipped her wings out under the moon’s light and glared at the Imperial.

Dandelion had a perfectly lopsided smile that even Magina had to admit was charming. Magina wasn’t about to fall for it, though. She knew Dandelion would be chasing after the next pretty Imperial, Ridgeback, or Pearlcatcher he saw within the hour. He was like that. It was part of his allure, but not part of his charm.

“Keep scolding me like this and I may develop a complex,” Dandelion observed. “I may look tough, but I’m very delicate.”

Magina whipped toward him with a barking laugh and sarcasm. “Delicate! Was that before of after you slayed the flock of Rocs?”

Dandelion considered that, perhaps remembering the tall tale he’d told not twenty minutes ago to garner the attention of some pretty Skydancers. “You know that’s all in good fun.”

All in good fun for Dandelion, maybe, since he cowered behind Magina while she did all the work. Just like tonight. He hurled a few poetic insults, but Magina didn’t count that for much of anything at all except to make their enemies more enraged.

“Just stay out of trouble,” Magina ordered, even though she knew that Dandelion didn’t take orders very well. Part of his allure.

“Right. Out of trouble.” Dandelion sounded sincere.

Like Magina. For all the times Magina said she would strangle him or leave him to die in whatever new trouble he’d found himself… it was just another tall tale.

Dandelion comes by his reputation honestly, and that’s about the only thing about him that is honest. He’s known (by those who really know him) to be a liar, lazy, and bound to chase after any lady dragon with shiny wings and a shapely tail. He can spin a good story, though, and that’s what keeps him fed and clothed and with a warm place to sleep at night. Even though he talks a good talk about wanting to settle down for real one day with a pretty dragoness, his actions make it perfectly clear this isn’t really what he wants.

After attending a prestigious bard school in Light territory, floating through his training with no trouble, he earned himself a position of disdain, regardless of his inborn intelligence and talent. Fortunately for Dandelion, there will always be academics that prize intelligence over morality. He made a fine living for himself traveling, teaching, telling, and collecting tales. He knows most of the dragons one would want to know in Light territory, as well as many of those in other territories. Somehow, no one’s sure how, he has a way of making himself seem acceptable to those in power. Or perhaps those in power are just as disgraceful as he is. There are a few exceptions to the rule of knowing just how base Dandelion is: Magina, the hunter who knows his true nature and saves him anyway; and Runa, the singer who knows that any dragon, no matter how deplorable, can change if he really wants to. Dandelion doesn’t seem to want to, even though he’s announced several times that Runa is the one. As if Dandelion believes in that kind of thing...

Dandelion is a disgrace to Light itself, and every dragon that knows it would tell him to his face. He just has the kind of face that a dragon takes pleasure in seeing disappointed. He has little regard for truth, making up his own whenever it suits him. Perhaps he sees beauty as the highest truth, and that’s why he chases after it so constantly. But, no, that would be giving him too much credit. He has no time for philosophy, and runs from the first sign of a question deeper than “What would you like to drink?” His grand designs for his life are purely to gain pleasure from moment to moment, sometimes disregarding the cost. Of course, he knows enough about dragon nature to manipulate it to his ends, so maybe he does know a bit about truth after all.

It is said that the only thing an Enamored Swan enjoys looking at more than another Enamored Swan is itself. Most assume the same is true of Dandelion. He keeps a small mirror with him at all times, presumably so he can make sure he’s presentable before going out on stage, and that mirror sees more eye-contact with him than any other dragon. The flock of geese that gather around his favorite haunts have no more love for him than they do any other dragon that passes by in pursuit of a drink or another dragon, but that’s why he likes them. He feels they have some sort of deeper connection, based largely in the fact that they have no connection at all.

Mana Thief The Tempest Chase may never have come to hire Dandelion for anything if not for Magina. As an Imperial of many worthless words, few true friends, many petty enemies, and relatively few skills, he found himself in need of a personal bodyguard for a time. Fortunately for Dandelion, the Chase was in town. Magina, strapped for treasure and an itch to spend, took on the job that no other dragon would. She has somewhat come to regret it, since Dandelion is rather like a bad rash that doesn’t go away, no matter how much ointment is slapped on it. At least Dandelion comes with a good story, unlike most rashes.

Even though Runa came to Light territory on the coattails of the Tempest Chase, Dandelion first saw her during her performance at the Crispy Phoenix. As usually happens with Dandelion, he was enamored with her deep colors, gold decorations, and peerless voice. Runa was a bit smarter than Dandelion, and well acquainted with any trick he tried. Despite her attempts, though, Runa had to admit that something about him intrigued her. Perhaps it was something as shallow as his dashing appearance, but she likes to tell herself she saw something inside him. Something better that he never lets outside. Woven Cloth
Phoenix To Dandelion’s eternal shame, he is no longer allowed to perform at Melqart’s establishment in Light territory, The Crispy Phoenix. When asked why he isn’t, Dandelion will spin some tale without fail about how it was one big misunderstanding: he didn’t know the waitress was under-age. Besides, Dandelion says he’s clearly no fighter, so he clearly couldn’t have gotten all those bruises that day for being an aggressor. Practically an innocent bystander. Magina’s never heard him tell this story… if she did, it’s likely he’d find himself with a few extra bruises.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» In a snide show of pride, Dandelion accepted his surname from an abusive nickname given to him by his fellows at school. He seems to enjoy announcing himself to a crowd as “Dandelion Buttercup.” Easy to remember, he says.
»
» Dandelion has managed to convince Runa to work with him on multiple occasions, as she is a much better vehicle for his songs than he is. He only has to sing everything he writes for her first.
»
» Though he loves lovely ladies, there is a way a female can persuade him to lose interest: puns. Dandelion hates puns with a burning passion. Regarding puns as high class amusement will earn a disgusted glare and quite a bit of distance from him. (a la AestheticToaster)
