The Shade isn't the only thing that comes from between the stars. The dark reaches of space are filled with living things (if anything that exists like that can be considered truly alive). They can be small enough to slip between atoms or large enough to use galaxies as stepping-stones. Some contain the knowledge of eons, some are little more than animals. Some feed on radiation and moonlight, some seek more... substantial nourishment. If, through some cosmic mishap, one were to find its way to a planet called Sornieth and find itself trapped there... well, the odds of that happening are infinitesimal. Even the thought is absurd. However. Sometimes, in the desert, you can almost see something. A purple-black spot floats in the air, carrying the faint scent of mushrooms and projecting somehow an air of sharpness. It lets off flashes of blue and pink which manage to be both too dull to attract attention and bright enough to hurt your eyes. It gives off an impression of tentative friendliness and swirling stardust. Come too close, and it's cold like nothing else is. Touch it? Who would dare? Besides the fact, of course, that if you even think about doing so it's already gone. A regular guest at Irving's tea parties. |
