Biography

It had memories of moments past. Nebulae burst into dazzling life and faded before it. Civilizations, buildings, dreams, cropping up beneath its claws, then fading just as quickly. The burning light of living from millions of creatures, whose names the creature did not care to know, for they were extinguished too soon. Shudders of power as the world was rent into pieces, and the elements fought and died. Great heaves as the gods interfered and that black, dark, soulless thing was repelled time and time again.

The creature stirred.

What was this? A break in the dream-state. Time slowed to a mortal standstill and the creature felt the crack in its prison. What mortal fool would dare?

A tremendous sound akin to that of thunder. The creature let out a rumble. Whatever creature had disturbed its slumber would pay dearly. Their kind had not seen something like it in thousands of years.

It knew not what they were, but it struck all the same. So busy was it in the quick slaughter, the shredding of minds and souls, that it did not notice the chanting. It was soon at the last mortal, but something made it pause. The mortal was not afraid. It saw, for the first time, the true clarity of a mortal's sight. A beatific smile graced the mortal's face.

It snarled and dove for the mortal, but it was too late. An invisible tether yanked it back, back, to one of the dead bodies littering the ground. The creature shrieked, and the whole mountain shook with its fury. It launched itself desperately at the last mortal, but to no avail. It was dragged inch by inch into the body. There was a blaze of blinding light, and it saw through a mortal's eyes.

The creature lay on the ground, gasping in breath from its mortal lungs. A deep, burning hatred welled up inside of it. Claws clicked on stone in front of it, and it raised its head to see the last living mortal.

The dragon still had the smile on its face. "You have spent far too long below. The Great Lord requires your service. You will help us win the war."

The creature did not hesitate. Long as it had been since it had shared a mortal body, it still knew how to slaughter with one. Its claws slashed across the mortal's throat fast as lightning.

It left the mortal behind to drown in his own blood. The creature was too busy exploring its new body to care. It absorbed the body's memories, learning what he knew about the world. It could not remember the last time it had been in the outside world; it knew mortal civilizations changed on a whim.

But it was mortal now. The heart beating in its chest told it that much.

Light. More light than was from the mortals' torches. It glided out of the ancient cave. The light was blinding, but soon, it adjusted.

The land was more beautiful than it remembered. The creature glared down at it with indifference. It would find whoever thought it wise to unleash it, and then it would shed its mortal body. The world had gone too long without fear.
