Biography

In the beginning, it was just her and Magnus. Two Tundras desperate for companionship and warmth, nesting together on the Frigid Floes. They justified it by reassuring each other that it was just out of necessity -how else were they going to survive the winter?- but Esanna secretly started to cherish their time together.
There was only one way to go about telling him. During a harsh blizzard, when they were holed up in a den with nowhere to go, Esanna professed her love for Magnus and asked for him to become her mate. (She only realized once the words left her mouth that if he refused, being “holed up in a den with nowhere to go” would be physical agony.) Luckily, Magnus was only speechless because he was so pleasantly surprised. He pounced upon her for the most excited of nuzzles, gushing about his own love for her. And the rest was history. Not long after that, they established their own clan together. It was more than a bit shaky at first, especially with the chill of the Ice region. But their modest little lair was warm and cozy, they had plenty of food, and the nesting grounds were fortified... What more does a clan need? - Pride goeth before the fall. Their clan had overextended itself, sending scavenging parties farther and farther out for treasures and other riches. All of them, even Esanna and Magnus, held that bravado that came with Ice heritage: no cold could harm them like it could the other Flights. Snow, sleet, hail- they could weather it all and still sing praises to the Icewarden. Magnus was the one who pitched the idea for an overnight expedition into the uncharted reaches of the Fortress of Ends, but it was Esanna who put the plan into motion. The clan’s best fighters and scavengers banded together and left with spirits high, promising treasures beyond imagining upon their return. Magnus and Esanna, as the leaders of the clan, stayed behind to keep everything in order. Besides them, there was only a skeleton crew and the clan’s hatchlings, but it was springtime. Technically. Still below freezing, but at least the great beasts who hibernated through the deep winter would be sluggish. She never thought to ponder that they might be starving as well. Esanna woke to the screams of hatchlings and the roaring of beasts that night. She and Magnus ran to help, as did the few remaining dragons of the clan, but in the face of a starving pack of monsters as large as they were... There wasn’t even any hope to begin with. By the time the monsters had gorged themselves and left, Magnus, Esanna, and two eggs were the only survivors. Bleeding, battered, and utterly shell shocked, the pair hid in their den with the eggs and prayed for something, anything. They could barely hear each other over the fresh memories of screams constantly replaying in their minds. The scavenging party returned with a modest haul of treasure, but with two fewer dragons. The pair of hunters had perished in the Fortress of Ends, but it was nothing compared to the tragedy they found when they came home. Everyone grieved that night. The dragons from the party could barely even pick themselves up after returning- Magnus and Esanna were inconsolable. They stayed curled together with the two eggs -the mother of which was one of the two lost dragons- and shuddered, shook, sobbed. The father to the clutch of eggs was the only dragon who kept them going, bringing them food and being there for them in any way he could. Many nights he would sleep in their nest with them, not only incubating his eggs but also providing some shelter and support for the two scarred dragons. The two babies that hatched from the eggs, both girls, were what slowly brought Magnus and Esanna back to the land of the living. The girls’ father had no problem with them having an active role in his children’s lives, and together the three of them brought the sweetlings up. (The firstborn was named after her mother.) Since then, Esanna still blames herself for everything that happened, but between the support of her clan and the love from her mate and her two nieces, she has started to heal. - It was far smoother sailing for a while. But, needless to say, “Coatlization” was never a symptom Esanna would have thought healing would cause. Admittedly, there isn’t a direct correlation -she has no real idea how she woke up one day covered in feathers instead of fur- but once she finished screaming her head off she came to think of it as some sort of lasting mark from the tragedy she blames herself for. (She refuses to tell this belief to anyone, not even Magnus, not wanting any relapses from him either. She also does not mention her fears that a similar curse might fall upon Magnus.) Esanna tries her best to stay positive about the whole situation, even if she does have to bundle up in double the layers of blankets and furs at night. And anyways, now Magnus doesn’t stop going on about her “soft and squishy little Coatl tummy”. His affectionate cooing and nuzzling and kneading into her makes her forget that anything but love and warmth exists in the world. |
