Ferrum is believed to have been created from the residue of dying embers in a hearth, the last flickering flames creating an amalgamate of ash and shadow given sentience. After gaining his sense of self he left his homeland shortly after, moving constantly to satiate a strange sense of needing to "find" something that was driving him.

Despite not knowing what he was doing or why he was doing so, Ferrum continued to look for year after year. His form changed greatly over time, patterns became carved into his skin, keeping record of what he'd been through in his travels, and even his body itself changing shape to facilitate his long journey.

Finally, after many long years of search, Ferrum finally found what he believed he'd been searching for all that time- a fellow amalgamate, much like himself, borne of shadows and murk.
