Dragonfly is one of the older residents of the clan who has just recently found peace. Though her face has startled to wrinkle and she aches more than she used to, her calming, gracile demeanor makes her seem younger than her middle age. She is well-respected in the clan, and is always friendly and kind- but what many don't know is how much effort it took to become so gentle.
Dragonfly is an ex-exalt who struggled for years to find purpose. After a long period of crisis and depression, she decided to travel the world with a fellow soon-to-be exalt instead of serving a deity. The pair were madly in love as they relished in their adventures, and eventually settled in Arcane to start a family. But after the thrill of freedom ebbed away to domesticity, the two found they had nothing else in common. Her mate ended up leaving her soon after their only nest was hatched.
It was difficult raising 3 hatchlings on her own, and Dragonfly found herself yet again in a depression. But thankfully, she was not alone for long. Help came in the form of a yellow-blue pearlcatcher named Rainbow, who could relate to Dragonfly's struggles. Over time, Dragonfly was able to pick herself up, find love again, and find new passions in the form of botany. Today her children are successful, and so is she. Now with an impressive garden, a wife, and even an assistant to keep her company, Dragonfly is the happiest she's ever been.
Fodder.
That was all Dragonfly was meant to be.
She was one of the countless dragons born into a fodder program, hatched just to be sold off and sent to serve under one of the deities. It was a popular system, one where willing nesting pairs sold off their eggs to clans competing in Dominance. The parents would earn treasure, the clan would show their devotion to their deity. Win-win.
Exaltation has always been considered a high honor, even if treasure was exchanged to make it happen. But Dragonfly grew up utterly devoid of this honorable feeling the other exalts supposedly had. As a youth she sank into depression, seeing no true purpose to this life she was brought into. Of course, the system was understanding and allowed any to-be exalts to return home at the price of a refund. Dragonfly was tempted many times. It was the internalized shame and growing sense of helplessness that kept her there in the end.
Eventually her peers came of age and went to serve the deities. In her despondence Dragonfly did not join them; at least not right away. Seeing her reluctance, she was asked if she'd like to be part of a nesting pair instead. Being at such a low point, Dragonfly was convinced there was nothing else for her to do. And so she agreed.
(Often, she looks back at this moment and wonders how things could've been different.)
Dragonfly was in this system for years. Years of hatching egg after egg, each of their faces- all near identical faces- turning into not her children but her products, wore the skydancer down more than she could've imagined. After a time Dragonfly couldn't quite fathom, her mind started to break. She felt infinitely trapped in this cycle, spiraling deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper and-
One day, Dragonfly asked to be exalted.
Her service was purchased later that evening and she was sent to the Starfall Isles. She left her mate without a word. His face was something she didn't bother to remember at the time, a fact that follows her to the present day. But in the moment Dragonfly's mind was filled with new opportunities. All Dragonfly's suffering from the monotony, all the sleepless nights wondering if she could've found happiness sooner if only she had went to the deities like the rest of them, all those hatchlings' faces, all was about to change.
Or at least she hoped. But as she stared blankly at the strange pink cliffs and the brilliant night sky, Dragonfly knew from the deep void inside her that exaltation, too, would never make her happy.
That night was the first in years she'd gone somewhere new. The land was magical, the cosmos magnificent. It was strange and beautiful and a chance to start anew. But Dragonfly still could not feel happy. She couldn't find a shred of hope she yearned for so dearly.
So that is why, when a stranger approached the remorseful Dragonfly that night, his first instinct was to try and make her smile. "Too bad they didn't teach us to be smart," he huffed. "We'll have to carry the Arcanist's scrolls for the rest of our lives without ever being able to understand them."
Dragonfly, no longer fazed by much, simply turned to other with a sad sigh. "You're fodder, too?"
The stranger, a white-blue Ice skydancer, sat down next to Dragonfly in response. Despite him speaking no words, the action was confirmation enough. The two skydancers knew next to nothing about each other yet much could be told from their energies, picked up by the orbs on both their foreheads. Two strangers each drawn to the other's sensed dispositions, they bonded over their shared worries as they talked through the night, slowly yet surely bringing a smile to their faces.
Hours of talking eventually ebbed away as the pair watched the sky lighten. "What's your name, by the way? Or did they not even give you that?" Dragonfly asked, breaking the companionable silence that had fallen between them. It was common for fodder to be named the same few generic names, either something related to a clan's deity or, especially if from a program, something based on their looks.
"Moonstone. Do you have one?"
"Dragonfly. You can probably tell it's a fodder name."
"Actually, this is my first time meeting a Dragonfly. I like it," Moonstone admitted. "But there's lots of fodder named Moonstone. At least the ones with my colors."
Dragonfly was about to deflect the other's words before Moonstone interrupted her.
"I mean it. Dragonfly... has a nice sound to it. Maybe you know lots of dragons with that name, but I think it suits you." He faltered for a moment. "It's pretty."
First, Dragonfly's breath caught in her throat. Then a wide smile spread across her face and she laughed, laughed more than she ever had before.
"Moonstone," Dragonfly choked out between gasps as she struggled to recollect herself. "Moonstone, I've done nothing but follow rules my whole life. Never did anything, never enjoyed a day in my cursed cycle of a life. I... I'm being exalted soon. We're being exalted soon, and I've never had someone who could make me happy. Call it sacrilege, but I know the Arcanist won't make me happy. None of the deities would." She paused her rambling to look Moonstone directly in the eyes. "I'm sick of it. I'm not going. I don't want to."
"...And where will you go instead?"
"Anywhere. Anywhere with you, I mean. Moonstone, will you shirk our duties with me?"
Slowly, the shock on Moonstone's eyes turned to pensiveness, then acceptance, and finally, joy. Warmth filled his Ice eyes as he gave his answer. "Of course."
