______ Fire is a beautiful thing, is it not? Fire is the life force of all dragons. Whether we realize it or not, it is the core of our being. I know this. I have known this from the beginning. I am Hestia. Keeper of the Hearth. And this is my story.

I do not look like a dragon who keeps flames for a living, no? My scales are black and white, my eyes pale green. But the black striping my talons is ash, and my eyes are the flame of a fire hotter than most can imagine.

My childhood and upbringing were similar to that of many. My birth clan had not much empty space for young hatchlings, and my twin and our sister and I were sent to the Auction House shortly after we hatched, just like our three older sisters of the nest before us. I was purchased first, and taken to the icy reaches of The Fortress of Ends by a pale Fae, son of the former king and queen, and emissary of the current ruler. I was raised with the other Pearlcatchers, but made no friends among any of the dragons. Instead, I spent much of time under Dunhara’s care, curled by the hearth, staring dreamily into the flames.

______ As soon as I had reached my full growth, I was required to take on a profession among the clan, in order to be useful to my new queen. Many positions were open to me, but I chose none of them. Instead, I requested that I be allowed to tend the clan’s open hearth, located in the main cave where much of the clan spent most of their time, where travellers stayed, and where the market thrived. The hearth was a sacred place, where all who asked found sanctuary. It was not well cared for in that day, however, and often guttered down to mere coals before someone relit it. I wished to care for it, and to monitor the users of its glory.

My request was granted in due time, and I became Keeper of The Hearth.
