Biography

I'm the only one who can see the ghosts.

They call to me. They whisper secrets in my ear. They are always there, surrounding me on all sides. It's kind of depressing, really.

But there's one ghost that catches my eye. And it's not her faded jewelry, her strange violet eyes, or the sad droop of her wings. No, ArcaneShadows is something special, and I know it.
Most of the other ghosts avoid me. None of them meet my eye. All though they are still there, they try to pretend they're not. But ArcaneShadows doesn't. She sees me. She looks me right in the eye. She talks to me, though she refuses to say how she died. One day I grew sick of it. When training with my mentor, Ember, I asked her who ArcaneShadows was. Her eyes grew wide, and her horns flattened back. "Shh..." She hissed, and then glanced around to make sure no one was watching. My usually talkative mentor was silent. Finally, she spoke. "Do not mention her around the others. She nearly destroyed the clan."
"How?" I asked, not sure I really wanted to know. Bile was rising in my throat. "It was a summer night, just like this, a few decades ago." Ember walked further into the woods we were in, which now seemed silent and empty of noise. The thornlike jewelry she wore shook as the Pearlcatcher trembled. Nothing frightened Ember. Why was she so scared?

Ember gulped and started again. "She was growing too strong. We were worried. So we tried to lock her up for our safety; and her own. But she managed the impossible; she broke out." The Pearlcatcher was breathing hard now; her eyes had rolled back in her head as if she was reliving the horror scene herself.
"I tried to take responsibility for locking her up, to save the clan. I hoped she would kill me and then be stopped. So I half lied and said I had done it. She pushed me into a thorn bush, and the vines clung to me." Here Ember started crying, and unfolded her wings to show the umber thorn designs etched across her wing bones. It had never occurred to me of something, one thing; I had never seen Ember take off her thorn jewelry. It dawned on me just as she explained. "And, well, the thorns never came off." Ember pulled at the vines, her face contorted in pain. They didn't budge.

"Luckily, a brave dragon called Orc killed her just in time, so now she's gone." Ember's shoulders slumped, as if a huge weight had just been lifted from them. Then she collapsed to the ground, unconscious, and I closed my eyes.
I saw a shimmering form standing behind Ember's crumpled body when I opened my eyes again. Her chertuese eyes glinted in the moonlight. "Liar." Snarled ArcaneShadows softly.
