The ultimate function of prophecy is not to tell the future, but to make it. Your successful past will block your visions of the future. - Joel Barker

There is an old story scribed on a tablet, lying somewhere in the ruins of an old family shrine. When one scrapes away the dust and the moss, they will find an ancient tale, one of few. It is the rare account of a humble pond-dwelling koi, who so loved the light of the surface that it’s ambitions caused it to grow wings. The fish emerged from the water to walk on land as a dragon, defying it’s birth and rising to meet the sun and the sky.

Could such a story be true?

Rumors of the old tale sometimes reach Kimochi’s ears. She humors the stories with a good natured smile, but always dismisses them as legend. She knows why they ask. They see it in her. She serves the clan as a koi augur, interpreting the movements and behavior of fish in order to pass along the Lightweaver’s prophecies. She bears this gift, with all it’s grace and dignity, but she also wears the very pattern of the koi on her body. She knows them as intimately as a bird knows the sky. Even her movements seem to flow like a fish through water. Could it be that the old story is about her?

Not quite. But the story is not new to her.

It has lived in the hearts and minds of the the graceful koi for even longer than it’s been known to dragons. Rather than falling into obscurity, found scribed on old tablets or occasionally whispered as a quirky folktale, the story has become a legend among them. For those who admire the sunlight above, it represents hope. A humble koi, through great effort and desire, can take up the wings of a dragon.

Many consider it symbolic, rather than literal truth. Kimochi knows better.

She lived her life as any other koi, living with her soulmate and enjoying the affections of her caretakers, until her love and admiration for those keepers drew her to the surface. Her new form mirrored the old in grace and color, but was indistinguishable from a natural born dragon. When asked about her affinity for the beautiful fish, she deflects the questions with a friendly laugh and a simple question: “If I am a fish, then why don’t I have the water flight’s eyes?”. Thus far, nobody has an adequate response. They are always left mystified, confused, and perhaps a little more or a little less suspicious.

Kimochi is able to return if she chooses. When she falls into the water, her body reverts to it’s old form, leaving her clothes behind on the surface. When returning to land, she must reclaim them and dry them before once again donning her sagely robes. She takes great care of her garb, not necessarily because it’s vain, but because it’s sacred. The same could be said of her shadow pearls and her collection of fish bones, which she wears proudly as part of her attire. She’s often gifted those pearls, which she always accepts with grace. It isn’t her desire to appear greedy, but she cherishes them regardless. Not only does it flatter her for the other dragons to value her prophecies, but the little trinkets remind her of home. They remind her of her love, who remains in the pond.

She lives this new life in secret, using her gifts to benefit the clan while frequently visiting the pond. Her heart years for her old mate, who she tries in vain to coax from the water. He always refuses, and he never says why. She fears that he feels betrayed, or perhaps is simply too heartbroken by her departure to put his feelings into words. But whatever the reason, the result is the same. Kimochi remains on the land, while her soulmate remains in the water.

There are nights where she approaches the water and calls to him, and he meets her at the surface. She will crane her neck forward and kiss his slick scales, looking on mournfully, for in their time apart, they have grown more different. He remains her soulmate and always will, but it seems that both of them realize that things can never be quite like they were before. Even so, whenever she approaches the shore, he comes. When she spreads her wing across the water, he swims in her shadow. Surely he must yearn for her just as she yearns for him, but his reasons for staying in the pond are his own.

There are times that she considers returning, but she knows in her heart that she never will. It can be tempting, especially when the sting of separation is too great, but she loves the world of dragons too much. She loves her new place among the clan, using her connection to the water and to her kin as a means to interpret the will of the deities. She loves the relevance that it gives her, she loves the freedom of moving in air, and she loves the sun on her scales. She feels as if she were born to become a dragon. Unfortunately, the pursuit of her goals has forced her to give up one of the most precious things in her life. Some would say it takes strength to make such a sacrifice. Others might call it selfish.

For Kimochi, the soul’s desires are not a matter of interpretation. She’s made her choice, and she will live with it. She followed the ways of legend, and now she lives as a testament to it’s truth. She is a being of two worlds.

*Kimochi is a fish auger. By studying fish, living and dead, she's able to tell prophecies and speak the word of Lightweaver as she's able to see it.
*She's mainly known for the fish bones she collects and wears across her sage clothing and wings.
*They say Kimochi is actually a koi fish out of a pair that morphed into a dragon to protect its caretakers and loved them so much that she refused to go back into the lake she came out of. Kimochi laughs at this, and with a sweet voice, asks why she wasn't born with water eyes then before leaving them puzzled. Their guesses are true though! She longs for her soulmate (the other koi fish - a shadow koi/dragon), but her want to be with dragons is just too strong for that.
*If Kimochi falls into water, she'll morph back into a koi fish. Her sage attire will float on the water like regular clothing. She doesn't change into a dragon with clothing on, so she has to dry her clothes out and put them on whenever she comes back as a dragon.
*Kimochi is a young adult and is often flattered by pearls. She wears shadow infused pearls around her sage apparel to remember her soulmate still in the lake.
*Sometimes she goes to their lake and tries to coax her lover out of the water, but he refuses to leave. She doesn't understand why. Maybe the shade in the lake is better for him like the light on the surface is better for her? In any case, he sometimes comes up to the surface so she can give his scaly forehead kisses. He swims around in her shadow whenever she stretches her wing over the lake.
*Kimochi is an explorer at heart. She doesn't stay in one clan for long and always goes back to her old hut she built beside her lake/home. No one really knows where this place is, but they can only guess it looks like paradise to make such a beautiful dragon like her.
