Avox is one of the older dragons in the Sandshark crew. Notoriously silent, he and his rig are quite independent. After a caravan or train has been taken down, the carnage will often attract scavengers. It’s up to Avox and his wicked shrapnel bombs to take care of them. Avox’s rig, Warthog, is made up of bones and twisted chunks of metal. Like most of the other crew’s rigs, most of Warthog came from the same scrapyard that the crew was founded in. Avox came later and made the rig his own after the last occupant died. A spear to the head, or so he heard. Avox took that weakness to heart and riddled Warthog with giant spikes. He suspects the bones making up Warthog’s tusks are snapper, as they splinter instead of bend. Thankfully out on the Barrens, there’s quite a few bones to go around.

“Hold on, hold on, hold on!” The laughing voices at the campfire echoed over the dunes. Avox sat slightly away, his back warmed by the fire. He was on sentry, and his only company tonight was spicefire rum. A drawn-out belch from the campfire resulted in cheers. It was one of Artemis’ best, a trick she had learned from another lady back home. Home. It was an off thing to think of. Years, spent under the canopy of leaves, never quite getting dry after the last deluge. Now? He spit onto the ground and watched the sand soak it in. He surmised that was the last patch of moisture the desert had seen in a while. The dryness assaulted him, sand ground through the cracks of his scales, and the heat made his headdress smell like dog. But he had only bonded more with his crew. He had snuck out one night to the Swamp, where he met a ship that glowed in the dark. A dragon on that ship, or perhaps the ship itself, agreed to make him disappear. They knew a clan that were just starting out, and making names for themselves. They had fled a riot in the south among fireworkers and had taken their skills up around where the ship made his plunder. Surprisingly, they had made peace, and now work as the ship’s scrappers. And so he had been welcomed. It also explained the hulking chunks of metal surrounding him. The Beast loomed in the distance, a hijacked train now decorated with banners and artillery. A dragon now wandered among it, almost invisible among the shadavar teams. Artemis, probably checking her animals. No one had devised an engine quite as strong as the ones that power the trains through the Barrens, so they still relied on the strength of the shadavar to help pull the Beast. She was a slow machine, but she was their new home. Avox stretched, placing his feet on the wheel of Warthog. He narrowed his eyes and scratched at a crevice in Warthog’s tyres. She had picked up some sort of burr on their last race and it was caught in the leather. Artemis belched at the campfire behind him. That wasn’t right. He looked at the Beast again. There was the movement again, a dragon hunched over a sleeping camel. Avox dug into his pockets for an incendiary, striking it on one of Warthog’s spines. “Intruder!”
