Beyond the brook at the edge of the wood, beyond the thicket growing deep, she comes across a lone pink flower peeking out from between the roots of a tree. It looks just a little bit like a lily but grows darker at the center white to pink to a dark red almost like the color of blood. She knows what will happen if she takes it, she has come this far after all, but she takes it anyway and shoves it into her mouth just as it begins to wilt away like the tree who's foot it had been resting on. It tastes like syrup and nothing both at once, and immediately she is filled with the urge to spit it out. A small red dot drifts up from the dying tree, "What wish do you have that would justify this?" She sits back on her haunches, the taste of the flower changing and turning her head fuzzy, "None," she says, "I only wished to see what eternity tasted like." "Then you are selfish," said the the voice, "do you care nothing for the death you have brought? I would have expected more from a Skydancer." She turns her head towards the tree, it's leaves have begun to fall and where they touch the ground the grass has begun to decay. The air is filled with the bird cries, not cheerful but terrifying. She can feel all of the magic in the air curling back and away from the place where the flower had been. "I consider myself to be a different kind of Skydancer," she tells it, "I love few of my kind and though I do pity your forest, my curiosity outweighed any guilt." The being that had come from the tree was translucent now and flickering rapidly back and forth from being there with her and being somewhere else. She could feel its magic being torn away the strongest of all, "I will be sure to tell the young dragons that I meet in my travels about you," she said, "I'm sure they'll find you and your forest a lovely story and you won't be forgotten." With a shudder and the last of its breath the creature says, "I have found no kindness in you, so instead of a wish granted I shall impart upon you a curse. You will mind this wood in my stead and it will be you who will perish if the forest flounders. Learn to love it as you have loved nothing before and be as me a fairy of the rose. Feel as I have the hurts and longings of every creature that walks this forest and guard them as you have your heart, before everything else." The spot of red disappears like it was never there at all and Fairyrose, because that is what she is now, can feel everything. Where she once felt only the movements of magic and the beat of her heart she now feels everything. The hum of a hummingbird several trees away - its frightened. A bug next to her head who's presence she hadn't even noticed before - he's not so much scared as he is hungry. But most of all she can feel the tree in front of her stitching itself back together, she watches as its bark glows a brilliant gold and re seams before her eyes and a brilliant flower that looks almost like a lily but not quite grows up from between its thickest roots. Maybe, she thinks, I can find my way back to who I want to be here. |
