“Why don’t you believe that you are beautiful?” He asked. She shook her head. “I’m not.” “I asked you why,” He insisted. “Why, why? Please?” It saddened him greatly that despite all of his effort and her past happiness that now she had finally snapped, and that he could no longer protect and reassure her from the outside world.
After some time, she took a long breath, and spoke. “Look at me,” She whispered, her claws traveling up her body to where they ended rested on either side of her head. Her eyes were glassy, and her words were ghostly. “I’m shattered,” Her voice broke. “I’m not ideal. I’m not one that would be prized by all the audiences; the most wonderful of my dreams are faded. The clock has struck twelve, and I am no longer the princess.” She suddenly turned upon him with such fury, that he flinched away. “How could you shield me from my true self? You practically lied to me my entire life!” She shouted.
“I was trying to help you…” He said. “It’s not helpful to make me a shallow narcissist! You may have thought you were helping, but in case you hadn’t realized, it wouldn’t have been such a shocker when the mirrors fell if I knew I was ugly all my life.” He bowed his head before her in shame.
“I was really doing what I thought was best. You see, I’m in love with you.” “You are?” She snorted. “Then why did you do this?” He threw up his paws in protest. “I didn’t do anything! I’m a simple mirror dweller who reflects what I see into your eyes.”
“What’s that supposed to mean, you freak?” Her arms were crossed against her chest in a defensive position. “You’ve always saw yourself how I see you, until now, when I was forced out of the mirror. I didn’t lie to you, I simply showed you the truth in the one way I could; the world from my perspective. I…” He sighed. “Didn’t mean to cause any harm. I wanted you to be confident in yourself, and I wanted you to believe you were beautiful. I still do. Because you are. To me, you are that and much more. So won’t you accept it?”
“If they don’t think I’m beautiful, then I sure as hell don’t.” “Who’s ‘they?’” The male growled angrily. “Everyone,” She scoffed. “I’m not everyone. And I think you’re beautiful. Why does everyone matter? What do you want from those dragons? You want a whole crowd crowing that you’re the apple of their eye, when they just turn their backs and walk away as soon as the show’s over?” She drew away from him, hurt. He continued, words rising in strength and intensity but not volume. “I will be the crowd, but I will never let my eyes stray from you. I will be the crowd, but when I say you’re beautiful, and that you’re all I care about, I’ll mean it. Don’t crave affection from those who don’t care about you. Don’t choose over the one who cares about you the most, and who is at your right hand side, a sea of ignorant souls. I will be your fame, your fortune, and your mirror. And I want you to be my mate.”
She wept, but he wrapped her in his wings. “Okay.” Was all she could choke out for a generous amount of time. When she said something more, he was waiting to listen.
“But if you’re my fame, my fortune, and my mirror; what am I to you?”
“My love, you’re my heartbeat.”
