~History~

From the moment I opened my eyes, I was aware of my surroundings. My siblings squirming beside me, my parents looking at me with pride. I could never understand until I saw myself in a pool of water in the lair; I was red. A very vibrant red that my siblings weren't. Then I was proud of myself too.

Until the day my siblings and I were taken from our nest. My parents didn't even object. They just watched us get flown away, fear and conflict in their eyes. We were brought to the underground trading post, a place dragons were sold to other clans. They told us that if we didn't get sold, we'd be sent back, so I did my best to be invisible. Problem was my bright scales made me stand out. I was terrified.

Eventually, a dark Nocturne approached me and looked me over. I was tense. She seemed to terrify me, but if she didn't take me, I'd be sent back. Sent back only to be given to the deities. After what seemed like forever, she turned to the overseer. "I'll take this one." With a quick exchange of treasure, the overseer unlocked my cage and pushed me to her. "All yours."

I looked at my siblings being led back to our old lair as the Nocturne flew me to hers. "My name is Somnia. What's yours, little one?"

"I... I don't have a name."

"Really? Your parents didn't even name you before sending you away?"

"I don't think they wanted to. I think it's what they had to do."

"Oh, it's those kind of lairs..." Somnia smiled sadly. "They have their reasons. I myself am half glad they exist, because then I could meet lovely hatchlings like you."

I felt my cheeks turn redder than they already were. It's been awhile since anyone had praised my like that. She landed in a dark lair somewhere in Shadow territory. There were dragons scurrying around all over the place when Somnia brought me to the nursery.

"We had just moved back from the Starfall Isles. Please forgive the mess."

"No, it's fine."

"The nests aren't totally finished, but they are comfortable enough for our hatchlings. Please play nice."

I looked around and saw three other hatchlings staring at me. Two Ridgebacks and a Coatl. They were younger than me, but they seemed to like me. Other older dragons checked in us every few hours, mostly to feed us or simply to make sure we aren't doing anything dumb. I liked the dragons here. After trailing and bugging the dragons in the lair, I finally convinced them to teach me their ways of mischief and thievery. It was fun. Astrum taught me that thieves hide in plain sight. Tenebris taught me you don't have to lie to deceive. Sparrow taught me that as long as the dragons you care about smile, you can be as annoying as you want to be. They showed me the ropes, the dos and don'ts, some tips and tricks. Not to brag, but I was a fast learner. I was good; good enough to borrow from Luna's hoard, much to her annoyance and frustration.

I liked the Foxfire Bramble, but it was still too dark for me. With Somnia's permission, I left for the Southern Icefield, where they said the siblings of my denmates were sent to be a part of a growing Ice clan. Corvinne offered a ride, but I wanted to see the world for myself. So, on barely developed wings, I took off.

I had almost reached the Ice domain when a I got the feeling a storm was about to hit. Trusting my instincts, I dove into a sheltered little den just as the first wave of snow fell. I was stuck in there all night long and well into the morning. By the time it settled enough for me to come out, most of the landscape had turned into a blinding white. Shaking myself to keep warm, I trudged onward through the snow.

I hadn't gone far when I spotted an unusual glimmer amidst the frost. Curious, I went over only to find a Nocturne about my age, barely breathing and obviously exhausted. I looked at her for a moment when she slowly opened her eyes and met mine. They were an icy blue, but there was no denying the hope that flared into them.

"Please... Help..." she muttered before passing out again. There really wasn't much to think about. I lifted her onto my back and walked back to the cave I sheltered in. When I brought her inside, she was shivering and cold to the touch. More than anything I wished I was a Fire dragon to help her. All I could do was wrap myself around her to share my body heat.

We must've stayed there for hours until I felt a shift under my wing. I looked down to see the Nocturne slowly opening her eyes again and glancing around.

"Wh-Where..."

"It's alright." I rubbed her head with my snout. "You're safe with me, I promise."

She blinked at me in surprise. "Wh-Who are you?"

I suddenly remembered that I was never given a name. I looked at her and smiled. "Just a young Imperial trying to find his meaning in life."

The Nocturne tilted her head to one side. "W-Well... what's your name?"

"I... I don't have one."

"R-Really?"

For once I actually felt a bit embarrassed. Until that point I was fine with being unnamed. Now it just felt ridiculous.

The Nocturne looked at me for a moment then blushed a bit. "I-if it's alright... C-Could I call you Red?"

"Red?"

"Y-Yeah."

I thought about it and laughed. Red. A simple, catchy name. It was perfect! "You know what? I like it!"

"Y-You do?"

"Yeah! From now on, my name's Red!"

The Nocturne stared at me like I was stupid. Then she started to laugh too. "Well then, Red, my name is Niya."

"Niya... that's a nice name."

Niya nodded and yawned. "I think I'll go back to sleep..." She wrapped her tail around her snout and sighed in content. Feeling drowsy myself, I curled up around her. As I drifted into sleep, I heard a very faint whisper. "Night, Red and thank you."

I smiled at her from under my tail.

"No. Thank you."
