A Tale of Lost Songs Sung

I watch the pond below me with a watchful eye, wisps of light dancing around me like playful little fireflies. If I didn't know any better, I'd say they were. They usually come out at this time of night, after all. I'd know. I used to sing in the fields after spotting them. I sigh as one light rests on my muzzle, warm and soothing like a little star before my eyes. I let out a chuckle, echoing around me. I always did have quite the voice.

It isn't long before I spot other lights. Other kitsune wander to the pond from their dens to enjoy the encroaching night. It isn't the common group, really. Yes, three Festival Shiro are chirping at each other about the day, planning more little shows of light and shadow, filled with flashes of brilliance in between when the sun comes again, and the Night Shiro seem more than happy to finally be awake, but it's hard to miss the little Foxfire dipping her paws in the pond, causing the water around her to steam. It takes me a moment to spot the Trickster, perched on a shattered pillar that had been taken by the land around us many years ago, and even the Festival Shiro pause when the Wraith Yako settles in a crevice, like a phantom haunting our little temple. I know better. The poor lesser may be a Wraith, but that spot is the perfect place to listen to the night, and for the Ashen. A perfect balance. I would know, seeing as I visited that very crevice often as a kit, practicing my songs.

I am not surprised when the pair of Cursed Tenko complete our motley lot, heads down as if to appear smaller than they were. It's futile, of course. We're the largest of our kin here, but I cannot blame them. I was like that too, once. Ashamed of my curse, of what had taken me. They had changed long after their trials, and bore their curses with shame and a deep desire to be rid of it as soon as they can. I know better. I see it on my gilded wings, as light fights my curse even now. I still do not know how it happened, or if it will return me to my former glory, but I know to stay positive. Whatever magic is at work there seems to feed off of positivity, and I don't plan to change it anytime soon.

I clear my throat, and the kitsune fall silent. Even the wildlife of Gleanreal softens it's many voices as I shift on my perch. I look around at my little audience, and feel a sense of hope. They may not originally be from my temple, or my clan of Shiro, but they have become a new family to me. Some may be eager to travel again. Some may be eager to stay. However, no matter their walk of life, in this shattered echo I call home, we are all of the same clan.

I started to sing the songs of my old clan as a call of sorts, a changing of the light. It used to be a tradition of some of the Night Shiro to sing with the rising of the sun and the moon, allowing other Shiro to set up their watches and travelling Kitsune to get a head start on their travels. It used to be what I awoke to in my youth, watching the night as I sang my songs. We heralded the change of our watch between night and day. Surely these songs could serve their purpose now, in the remnants of my home! And for a time, it did.

Then, little by little, the Kitsune would rouse themselves earlier and earlier, trying to find the source of my call. By the time I finally noticed, they were as they are tonight, waiting for me to herald the night from my perch. It became a tradition as Kitsune came and went, to visit the pond at these pinnacles of twilight, like moths to a flame. Even travelers would be urged to stay, to listen to my performance. I never did mind it. I simply knew it brought them joy to hear, just like it did when I was one of the Night Shiro. Before my trials.

On nights like this, where my voice silences our little pocket of Gleanreal, I can forget my dull coat, with shadows racing up my paws and wrapping around my throat like a vice. When I can sing clearly to the sky, my eyes closed, when I swear I can hear my kin bustle around me as they talk of their days and nights, I can believe I am once again a Caller of the Night. Supposedly, on nights like these, the gold almost reclaims my wings in their entirety. I can only hope that one day it succeeds, and that it will return the luster of my fur as well. That I may be a normal Nine-Tailed Tenko once more. But that night is not tonight, and my song ends with a shimmer of hope to hold onto as I recall once more who I am.

I am Reiko, a cursed child born of Night Shiro, a Cursed Tenko with nine tails to match, and I sing to the night to become Miyako the Tenko once more.

Cursed Tenko

This rare breed of Tenko is formed through tragedy and power. Cursed Tenko are a Tenko whose enemies have either managed to curse them for some misdeed or their souls have been warped. Cursed Tenko are both seekers of redemption and swords of vengeance - it is difficult to tell which one is which and so they are often avoided. Some Tenko clans go to great lengths to aid cursed Tenko who seek an antidote and imprison those who have fallen. It is not uncommon for a cursed Tenko to experience changes in eye color or forms of heterochromia as they struggle to find a cure. All cursed Tenko retain their nine tails.
