Biography

Variant: Runecatcher
Name: Gwynbleidd
Alias: The White Wolf
Flight: Nature
Status of Runes: Invoked
Observations & Notes:
Note # 1: Gwynbleidd appeared one moonless night, carrying the severed head of a Wendigo over his shoulder, which he dropped right at Antafes’ paws. No one had seen him coming, no one had announced him crossing into our territory. He appeared like a ghost out of nowhere and walked straight up to the standing stones, where Antafes usually rests, claiming that we obviously had an infestation problem in our graveyards. As the pale white Pearlcatcher and the giant Guardian stared at each other, the tension was almost palpable. Antafes is a fearsome warrior, but the white Pearlcatcher, cladded in worn-out and battered armor, was encased in an aura of utmost self-assurance. It became clear to me almost instantly, and I’m sure this was also true for our Clan leader, that this was an experienced and dangerous warrior that should not be crossed incautiously. Luckily, Antafes managed to cool his temper and the pale Dragon was received peacefully though not very warmly. Those on watch that night got quite a pounding from our ill-tempered Leader, but I myself am sure that this was not their fault. I recognized the Pearlcatcher, who introduced himself as Gwynbleidd, as a Runecatcher almost immediately. And I guess that eerie pale dragon with his faint, almost invisible runes is a very powerful one.
Note #2: Gwynbleidd is not a very social fella, he mostly keeps to himself. Nothing in his demeanor implicates that he wants the company of others and most respect that. I, however, have an obligation as a researcher, to study and record those with powerful magical abilities. I suspected him to be a Runecatcher, a subspecies I’m quite familiar with by now, so I willfully ignored his rejection of company and approached him one evening to confirm my suspicions (though I must admit it took several attempts and I suspect he also uses his powers to keep nosey dragons like me at bay). As I feared, he was not the most talkative and forthcoming conversational partner. The fact that the black wooly cowl he is always wearing makes it impossible to see his eyes properly doesn’t exactly contribute to a relaxed atmosphere. At least he admitted to being what I call a Runecatcher and suggested to give me a demonstration of his powers. He will be hunting for monstrous creatures that roam our almost forgotten graveyards at night the next day and he invited me to come along. Gwynbleidd has an obsession with hunting dark and unnatural creatures as he calls them, and everyone is pleased that someone is doing something against all the spectral creatures that haunt the old burial grounds here.
Note #3: My hands are still shaking while I’m writing an account of what I witnessed tonight. I wouldn’t call myself a warrior, but I’ve seen my share of bloody battles and ferocious fighters. Nothing, however, was quite like what I saw tonight.
It was a moonless night and I followed Gwynbleidd and his wolf companion to the very edge of our Clan’s territory, where an old burial ground is located. Anyone hardly ever goes here, and after what I saw that night, I guess it’s for the best. I know from Ishtar that a most gruesome battle had taken place here long ago. It seems that the echo of this cataclysmic event still lingers and attracts vile creatures that feast on this place’s dark aura. I could already see a cloaked figure, floating eerily above the ground, when we approached the ancient killing field. Suddenly, that wolf companion of his let out a bloodcurdling howl, and I noticed that a soft glow was emitting from Gwynbleidd’s runes. He also had a silvery sword in his paws, I’m not sure where that came from as I have never noticed him carrying a sword before. As he approached the cloaked figure, I noticed how smooth his movements were, full of strength and power. I’m sure his invoked runes greatly enhance his physical strength and stamina, because what followed his approach of the lone specter, was pandemonium. As soon as he stepped on the old battlefield, his runes flashed up in a blinding light and the ground rumbled and shook. Suddenly, there wasn’t only one specter, but dozens of the most horrifying and atrocious creatures I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure whether they were ghosts, apparitions, demons, monsters or a bit of everything. But they were belligerent and bloodthirsty, howling and screaming as they lunged at the lone pale Runecatcher. I was rigid with shock; how could anyone fight against dozens of those foul creatures? But then the fight began and I was transfixed. Gwynbleidd was moving with the certainty of a sleepwalker, dodging blows seemingly at the last moment while cutting a deadly path through his enemies with his swirling silver sword. No one should be able to move that fast, I thought while I watched him slaughtering these otherworldly creatures. Their screams made my blood curdle as did the Runecatchers yellow glowing eyes which were visible under his cowl. He, unlike his foes, was fighting in deadly silence. When one of these vile creatures made a move for me, taking me for an easier prey than him, I froze. I have seen my share of beasts and fought many of them but never such a malicious otherworldly creature. Her eyes were gleaming red and saliva was dripping from her inch-long yellowish teeth as she floated towards me, faster than any living creature could move. Before she could get to me, however, Gwynbleidd appeared beside her, swinging his silver sword, he beheaded her in one smooth move. Her head rolled before my paws, and I looked up into his yellow gleaming eyes with dark slits for pupils. I swallowed hard and pulled my eyes from this strange sight. All the dark creatures were dead, some smoldering, some simply vanishing or liquifying as their bodies decayed. “You asked me for a demonstration of my abilities, are you satisfied now?” Gwynbleidd asked me seemingly untouched by what had happened here. I could only nod and I swore myself to be less enthusiastic when another Runecatcher offers me a demonstration of his powers. Descriptions should be sufficient…
