Gwangmin’s first memories were of being under the watchful eye of various members of his family and of the almost suffocating amount of attention constantly being trained on him. As an unexpected imperial hatchling, his parents fretted over his health until his sister’s suddenly failed and let it be known that this would not be an easy childhood. It was then that Gwangmin learned to regret his hasty wish for privacy as he saw less and less of his anxious parents. Very suddenly, he found himself alone.

Because of her. It was no fault of her own that his sister kept falling ill but every time his parents turned back to her, he blamed her more for it. He looked for places where she could not go and had a choice of two: the training fields or the kitchens. Choosing the second, he quietly made a vow that there he would make his mark. Nobody would ignore him there.

It was in hindsight a deeply childish thing to do but later, Gwangmin would never be able to regret it. The kitchens in Maserift were new and shifting, carved and re-carved by mountain spirits trying to accommodate the needs of too many chefs with too little experience. Soon, he was faced with the simple truth that Maserift simply had no good chefs. There was an entire library filled with thousands of years of magical knowledge and histories otherwise lost to the world. And they had no good chefs. Ridiculous.

Just like that, Gwangmin had found his place, shoving aside older dragons trying recipes that made no sense even as he tried his own that were complete nonsense and learning how to make them listen instead of laugh. Like mages from the College, he experimented with new and fantastic combinations until everybody in their finally stabilized kitchen agreed that the product was Good. He was young but he had become a legend. Well, among the chefs, anyways.

Gwangmin was aware, distantly, that his sister had shed her illness at some point and that she had left the mountain for some other lair. Where she had gone, he could honestly say that he didn’t much care. Perhaps that was his own fault but it was all in the past now. However, he could not ignore the fact that there were merits to leaving home. There were other recipes waiting to be tried, other ingredients meant to be discovered! After a talk with some of his closest friends, he made his choice. For the sake of innovation, it was time to leave.
