Achmetha could be described as the boy who never had a childhood. He was too young to remember anything about his mother before his father brutally disposed of her. There were others, but they, too, vanished before he could form an attachment. He knew nothing of love and kindness or what happened to any of the females that he saw for a short amount of time. The latter, perhaps, was for the best. What he does remember is what a child should never have to go through. He knows of hate, pain, and deceitfulness. The rare times where his father did something positive with him were quickly combated by vicious claws and bloodcurdling screams. His life became one of constant fear. The only silver lining in all of this suffering was a small portable radio his father allowed him to have, and it quickly became his only companion. It was all he needed to stay alive. The stations with music were static most of the time, but his favorite station became the one that worked without interruption. He found a small bit of comfort listening to sermons about a higher being. These stories he gripped tightly to. They became the light in the darkness and filled him with a hope that he might one day be saved. His wish was granted, but not before he lost all will to speak and even move in most cases. He grew so used to the pain that it become something he endured and didn't react to. His pleas for it to stop ended, and eventually he did not react to anything that was happening. He lay still, unresponsive, beaten into catatonic depression. The years went by with no change in him. He lived in a psychiatric hospital where he spent most of his days staring into empty space, unwilling to come out of the safe haven he created within himself. Something changed one day when he was visited by a priest. The touch of the older man caused him to smile -an action that did not reach his eyes- and to turn his head and stare into the blind eyes of the Father. Nothing more happened after that, but it gave hope that one day he might break out of the walls he built around his mind. |
