Dusk was not a Spiral dragon by birth. No, he hatched as a guardian dragon - hatched into a life of slavery from an egg stolen by a powerful clan of beasts. He was far from their only draconic slave - there were dozens upon dozens, each serving a particular function.

Dusk was an entertainment slave. That is to say, his purpose was to fight in flashy exhibition matches in a gladiatorial arena, entertaining his masters by spilling the blood of lesser beasts (and occasionally of lesser dragons). One such dragon entered the arena slated for execution – his name was Silverslash, and Dusk's task was to end his life.

Dusk failed, overwhelmed by a far more powerful combatant. Even though it was a death match, however, his opponent refused to strike the final blow.

It came to pass that both Dusk and his opponent were forgiven their respective failures. They were to remain in the arena, fighting against (and occasionally alongside) one another, as fully-fledged gladiators.

A bond formed between them, more than companions and more than brothers. A bond of absolute loyalty - Dusk pledged himself to the other in body and mind. As they began to plot an escape from the arena and from their slavers, Dusk did his utmost to ensure their success.

Surprisingly subtle and stealthy despite his large size, surprisingly intelligent and perceptive despite his brutish appearance, Dusk gathered information. Information about guard patrols, about supply caches, about anything that could aid their escape.

When their plan was set into motion, his information was invaluable - but his sympathy nearly killed them both. In the process of attempting to save six dragon hatchlings, Dusk was mortally wounded. His companion quite literally dragged his dying body to safety - dragged it across the borders of beast territory and into a territory held by dragons, where the beasts could not follow.

They were free, the hatchlings were free, but time was running out. Desperate to save him, Silverslash did the unthinkable - he performed necromancy to save the other's life. An unfortunate Spiral dragon was sacrificed to become Dusk's new body, a relatively undamaged vessel that could contain his fading essence.

The necromantic ritual was far from perfect. Cast without experience or training, it damaged his essence - he is no longer able to feel emotions, be they sadness or joy, and can now perceive the thoughts of others, whether he wants to or not.

In their continued travels, he and his companion soon met with a band of criminal misfits. The other saw it as an opportunity to lead, to take control of the band and shape it into a genuine clan.

Dusk has chosen to aid his companion's every effort - loyal to a fault, he owes the other his life and his freedom. He sees himself as being naturally subordinate to the Guardian, and is a constant presence at the other's side - even if not visible to the average observer. He is now the third-in-command of the Unrepentant Clan. He keeps his leader in check, keeps his leader (relatively) sane, and above all, keeps his leader safe.

Nothing that occurs within the Clan of Second Chances can be kept secret from Dusk. He knows every detail of the innumerable plots, plans, and schemes of his clan mates. It's his business to know. Yes, the Spiral is a spy - in fact, he is the spymaster of the Clan of Second Chances.

Naturally, Dusk keeps many of the clan's dragons under surveillance, including the entirety of the traitor faction. The dragon whom he most deeply distrusts, however, is Chaos - the second of his leader's mates. The Ridgeback speaks openly against their leader, and has on several occasions attempted to assassinate him.

The Spiral is certainly aware of the concept of keeping one's friends close and one's enemies closer, but even he cannot comprehend the logic of taking the clan’s most prominent traitor as a mate.

Dusk, of course, was the first mate that Silverslash took for his own, and despite mistrusting the others, he has never once been jealous of them - after all, he is the original. He has known the Guardian the longest and the most intimately. There is no jealousy, because he knows that he is objectively superior.

In addition to his work as a spy, the Spiral tirelessly serves as the clan's chief tactician, chief treasurer, and chief archivist. Some might even say that Dusk is the only one keeping the Unrepentant Clan running smoothly...

And they wouldn't be wrong.
