Within the Hewn City dwelled a light scholar, who was too stubborn to be dissuaded by the warnings that others parroted about the blasted ruins. It drew him forward with the same inexorable force that pushed others away, and when he entered, he swore that he wouldn't leave its confines until he'd brought all of its secrets into the light. Warnings were for other people; he would be victorious. In truth, if the scholar was smart enough to stay alive, he'd find a welcome place in Iostephanos. No one can confidently say what happened to him within that labyrinth. He may have wasted away, he may have found the secret that soothed his soul. Whispers stated that he'd grown more and more protective of his research, the secrets only he was privy too, and began constructing strange constructs to jealously garden his madcap secrets. But the whispers never solidified. Nothing is certain when the dedicated fall victim to their work. The only certainty is that Resonance emerged from the Hewn City, bright as the dawn's light and searching for a new purpose. He guarded traveling merchants, acted as bodyguard to dragons of questionable temperament, wandered the high and low places of the world, before alighting on one little corner of the Starfall Isles. It'd be a lie to say that, at first, interest in him wasn't primarily academic - for who had seen something like Resonance before? A construct, a being cobbled together from magic, light, and Arcanist knows what else, given a thrilling degree of sentience. Sentience, it seems, wasn't part of the design plan, as it rests awkwardly on Resonance, who wavers between programmed loyalty and the deep melancholy of being out of place. Awkward, shuffling, jerky, a machine programmed beyond what it was supposed to do. But he has something to protect now, and for the first time, he is part of that protection. The feeling of belonging was not woven into his magical programming, but it is warm, and pleasant. He has a job. Protect the Clan Iostephanos, and dote on hatchlings - the latter isn't an official responsibility, but they do love the sparkle and shimmer of his biological armor, the gloss of a magical construct. Resonance protects, and he loves. |
