Biography
V A Q U E R O
vaquero owns and operates forgotten ridge ranch, a large property in the rareza region. it borders the emberglow hearth and the highland scrub and is thought to be one of the largest ranches in the eastern regions. she employs many dragons to tend to her herds, but doesn't take that as an excuse to get out of work herself. to compensate for her damaged wings, she often rides a tame tunnel hydra, the only one of its kind at the ranch. often seen with her is an orange feline simply called the cat. she is sometimes seen having conversations with the feline. ranch hands swear the cat talks back to her, but he has never spoken to anyone else. many claim to see the cat watching them at odd hours of the night. |
FORGOTTEN RIDGE RANCH
large livestock

bred for general livestock purposes, such as meat or mounts
greattusk: the greattusk is well-known as a war mount, but also makes an especially good ranching mount. smaller varieties bred to be more agile can still easily overpower larger livestock.
ophiotaurus: notoriously difficult to farm, but ridiculously rewarding to those able to pull it off, the ophiotaurus is not recommended as a mount, but is prized for its meat and hide.
rambra: most varieties of rambra are not big enough to be ridden. instead they are used as pack animals, as they bond easily to other animals, even those outside their species, and will not leave their herdmates behind.
pohip: pohips are able to fulfil many functions and as such, are prized among livestock. these mobile sources of firewood and timber can also be used as pack animals or (rather slow) mounts. the 'meat' can be used to feed both carnivorous and herbivorous creatures.
greatowl: for many ranchers, learning to fly a mount is a difficult and highly sought-after skill. it is considered much harder than ground riding.
rockback: selective breeding of the rockback has resulted in varieties whose hide produce precious gemstones and minerals. their stony protrusions mean they do not make good mounts.
golden roc: like the greatowl, the golden roc is often used by ranchers to wrangle livestock from above. a bond between a roc and its rider is not easily broken.
mountain beetle: mountain beetles are fantastic all-terrain mounts. agile on land, able to climb sheer rock faces, and capable of flight, the only downside is how long it takes a beetle to reach a size suitable for riding.
small animals
tame versions of their wild counterparts, sold as pets

capricat: friendly and sociable animals that are very commonly found on farms.
ferret: an adorable but wiggly pet that needs constant supervision.
melprin: melprins make for unusual - but rewarding - pets.
jackalope: originally used by settlers to keep warm on cold desert nights.
gryphlet: very popular, very cute, very soft, and very energetic.
trunker: good pets and good meat, all in one nicely wrapped package.
lionsnake: experienced handlers only. not recommended to first-time pet owners.
herders
used to keep the animals in check; not typically sold

quillrunner: their immense speed makes them great at darting around animals that break away from the herd. however, their lack of stamina usually calls for backup.
hainu: where the quillrunner lacks stamina, the hainu makes up for in aerial reconnaissance. considered the jack-of-all-trades master-of-none herder, this animal is easy to train and eager, but lacks power and speed.
hyaena: if properly trained, hyaenas will return prey to their master rather than an idol, but this is difficult to achieve. in addition, they are known for being rather vicious with cornered animals.
owlcat: their aloof personalities mean they often work better solo than in groups, but they are an invaluable asset to any herding team because of their incredible hearing and night vision capabilities.

hazards
species deemed too dangerous to breed or tame.

basilisk: no explanation should be needed to explain why having basilisks around livestock and dragons alike is a bad idea. there are no known cures for petrification, so, although unfortunate, the recommended course of action with these creatures is immediate extermination before they can reproduce.
hydra: massive, destructive, and extremely territorial, hydras are a constant danger to the ranch and its livestock. though rare, they pose a threat due to their desire to expand their territory. as she is intimately familiar with just how dangerous they can be, vaquero cautions against any interaction.
mogollo: an elusive, rarely seen, and near-mythical creature, the mogollo (pronounced 'moe-gee-yoh') is best avoided. though not much is known about it, those who have seen it frequently fall upon misfortune, so it is thought to be a bad omen. luckily, it prefers to remain unseen.
chimera: the dual-headed nature of this aggressive creature makes it difficult to control or tame. in addition, its snake head is highly venomous. several decades ago, a few domesticated chimera escaped and formed a stable feral population in the rareza region.
widow: the range of these creatures has been steadily encroaching into the rareza region over the past several decades and especially recently, as new volcanic activity drives heat in the fire flight up and bleeds into the canyons. though they are not aggressive, there are some concerns over widows pushing out native wildlife.
pronghorn: the pronghorn is similar to the mogollo in that it is a legendary figure that brings bad fortune, but with two differences. first, that its omens are considered far, far worse than the mogollo's. second, that its existence is disputed - unlike the few confirmed mogollo in the region. however, recent whisperings have dragons nervous...
