Biography

Mate: Beile

Rackham was a quiet male. He was outgoing but usually stayed in the background just listening to others chatting. He was the solid rock to everyone and altho he was a recent addition to the lair he was considered family by everyone - even Tule.
Once he was ordered to do some gathering in the Southern Icefields. He was sent alone as the battles had ceased and he was going to no dragon's territory and it was very unlikely to run into beast clans. He was gone quite a while but not enough to cause anyone worry. When he came back he was almost unrecognizable. His coat ice-white and strange look in his eyes, he claimed to now be able to read minds, foretell the future and see the past.
It took everyone a long while but in the end, they got used to the new look of Rackham and his awakened alter ego - a nameless female who seems to take his body over from time to time. This female who shares his body is mute, at least she hasn't talked to anyone, but doesn't seem to want to cause any harm. What she wants, who she is or where she came from no one knows and Rackham has sworn not to tell, just like he has sworn not to tell any of the residents' secrets. The female's name is Hallatar (Frostress from frost and mistress. In Finnish folklore the female spirits were often named Ilmatar, Luonnotar, Osmotar - Mistresses of air, nature and ale)

(24.10.2017)Little by little the being possessing him changed Rackham. He remained his outgoing self but began turning his interest towards Ulseth, Livja's and Karthus' familiars and the friendly lair in the Southern Icefields, that was known in the lair to have an increasing number of witches and other shady workers. Little by little, it has started to seem that the female being has grown restless and many fear that it has started to merge with Rackham.

(28.1.2018)Norkul suddenly came to his home. Behind him was Beile. She had tears in her eyes and something about her told him that she knew what was going on. Norkul declared she was here to chain Rackham to stay in the lair. A swoop of fear came over him as he felt Hallatar taking over, filled with rage. He watched as Hallatar commanded his body to attack, only to be stopped by Norkul's cragward custodian that was as big as her. The familiar twisted a chain around his wings with a sure hand. When he let go Hallatar had tired herself out and went in slumber inside him. He felt the exhaust of his body and all the bruises the little scuffle had caused. Beile had fled from the scene. He looked at the chains. One end of the chains looked like it was buried in the ground, tho it faded before touching it. He moved the wing and the chain followed, having no drag to it even though the chain was tensed straight. It was an enchanted chain and he would be able to move normally in the lair. He wouldn't be able to fly very high not leave the lair. He was relieved of all duties that would permit him from leaving. The chain would remain on him as long as necessary. Norkul left after the explanation and he was left in the room alone with his chains. He was stuck. Hallatar would not be happy about this...

(5.9.2018) Hallatar had indeed been very unhappy with the imprisonment. She continued her shady activities but took full control less and when she did, she was angry. He focused these times on Beile. Directly after Norkul's declaration, she had lost her inner light. She was irritable and slept more and more. She had started to lose weight and she no longer seemed so passionate about her work as a healer. She dutifully carried out her tasks without complaining, but Rackham could see how she struggled to get out of their den every morning.
Then came Deimos' death. He had fallen into pestilent and turbulent waters on the borders of Water, Plague and Shadow territories and was swept away. Beile crashed. She didn't smile, eat or bathe. She no longer carried out her duties and neglected her mother's peacock scorpion. Rackham silently fought Hallatar so he could take care of Beile.
Rackham could feel Hallatar growing distant and there were full days she took no contact with him. He used all this time to help Beile. As the times when Hallatar was away begun to be more freguent and long lasting, Rackham confronted Sidyon and Zido, the ones he knew were watching him and keeping Ulseth away. The two were shocked of all the things Hallatar knew and were just as worried of her disappearances as Rackham. She ws clearly up to something.

(23.11.2018) Hallatar left. This time it was final. Rackham could feel the connection between them break. It hurt, like a broken bone. Despite the pain that had brought him screaming on the floor he hurried to tell Sidyon and Zido. The two seemed very worried - for him too - and questioned Rackham further. Rackham could recall him feeling relieved, triumphant, exited, expectant and hungry as the connection broke. He could've sworn he also heard the death-scream of a dragon. He was certain those were feelings from Hallatar.
Rackham was sent back to his den. After calming down Beile, who had been frightened by his behaviour, he had some time to think. The pain was still there but it had mellowed during the questioning. He felt strangely empty and numb. What would he do now? When Hallatar was around he had only half of the waking time at best to himself. Now he had all the time. All capacity of his focus. He felt alone. He had hated Hallatar, still did, but there was something so wrong in being only himself so suddenly. Even when Hallatar hadn't contacted him in days, he had still felt the connection between them. It wasn't something you could put to words, possibly not even paint.
What he did know was that he was alone and scared. He needed help, but no one to turn to. He had to take care of Beile too. Things were going to be hard...

(24.2.2019) Rackham's own arcane magic had been subdued by Hallatar's volatile ice magic. Now that she was gone Rackham's magic returned slowly and many-fold. He surged with magic, both arcane and ice. He wasn't really happy about it, he had enough on his mind without all this "suddenly powerful" -stuff! His powers seemed to be stable and after looking into it with Zido, Mordre, Luhdikka and reluctant Eben, it was concluded that nothing would be done at the moment.

(8.7.2019) Rackham was in the audience when Hallatar attacked. First time seeing her infron of his eyes was... strange. It was as if seeing a penpal after years of writing, exiting, happy occasion and yet he was terrified, because this was not his friend and he knew it. For some time he just stood there. The screams seemed so distant, like a dream. He took in every detail of Hallatar. How the tiny fae body twisted under her rule, how the feathers reminded of the body's past, of it's time as a free dragon with thoughts, family and dreams. Now it creaked under her as she blasted a massive Congeal.
Rackham stood slowly, never taking his eyes off her. All the terror was gone. What now surged within him was rage, pure and true, carefully harnessed and swelling. He was calm and felt the power gathering like a maelstrom under his command. He turned to Beile, who had been tugging on his leg the whole time.
"Go and help Hlyos" he commanded kindly and turned back to Hallatar. He took few steps closer to the horror show playing in the center of the square. He shouted her name. As she turned to look at him he let the maelstrom out. His fur stood on end as a thunderous gush of magic shot from his mouth. It ripped at his jaw like a whole waterfall trying to push through his maw, forcing it to open beyond its capability. It burned hot and cold. It felt like endless knives raking against his cheeks. And his eyes! He saw nothing but blinding white, but still he saw her taking the hit. No matter how his eyes felt like exploding in their sockets, or his jaw being shredded, he knew he hurt Hallatar more. And he reveled in it.

He awoke in the lair's small infirmary, still half under construction. He saw many residents there with minor and major injuries. Beile was working with Hlyos and that new nocturne close by.
"How do you feel?" Hagoer was laying behind him, his armor somewhere. "I heard what you did," he continued after Rackham nodded. "It was remarkable - very heroic - thing to do. You proved to everyone yesterday that you are a force to take in account." He stood and took few steps to the door. "I hope to see you after you've made a recovery. We'll need to discuss Hallatar and your powers more deeply."

It turned out that his arcane blaster was akin to vomiting - his body's way of getting rid of foreign magic within. What still was remarkable about it was that Rackham had instinctively "cocooned" Hallatar's ice magic and had been able to store it and then release it somewhat controllably. He had been able to maintain that cocoon even during the blasting so that Hallatar couldn't just absorb her magic back and instead was hit by arcane magic. Hagoer described it like using a diamond bit drill - the drill itself wasn't diamond but steel and it was only coated in diamond dust and thus could grind things steel couldn't.
