He grew up with a much older dragon named Hikaru who he looked up to as a role model in battle. Through her he met Hikaru's daughter Keiko.

At first he thought she was a disappointment. He had imagined her daughter to be beautiful, brave, courageous, and strong. Who wanted to follow in the steps she did, but no, she did the opposite, she followed in her father's footsteps.

Though he never met the dragon, he heard many stories about him in the lair, and very unpleasant ones at that, that were opposite to the ideals of Keiko's.

He constantly trains and to meet the expectations of Hikaru who agreed to train him. During his training, he pushed himself too far and got himself hurt so bad that he was close to dying, and was outnumbered. It was that time that Keiko intervened and healed him, who was useless in fighting. He repaid Keiko by protecting her at that time while they were outnumbered. He had a sense that he didn't return it fully, so he spent the rest of his dragonhood trying to repay her by protecting her and helping her train that he soon found that he was slowly falling in love.

He grew up with another dragon named Souma, who he could clearly care less about (even though he knew Souma was spreading slander of him.) He only ever paid attention to him as a rival in love.

Additional details:
Ever since the union of his daughter Ella and Tsubasa he became tremendously annoyed and even once and still does try to convince his daughter out of the marriage she's in. He cares about his daughter's happiness which made him tolerate their union, but that's not stopping him from attacking Souma who annoys every bit of him due to their union. The one thing that annoys him the most is when Souma calls Tsubasa his father-in-law or dad in general.
