Nyx is a tragedy. Her power is believed to come from prolonged exposure to the Miasma. Whether or not that is the truth is difficult to decipher, but regardless of the power's origins, it is far too much for a young Imperial to handle. Afraid to hurt those she is around, Nyx often locks herself indoors. She sees herself as something of a social outcast, with few family and fewer friends. Anthean and Yamanu took her in as a hatchling, after her hatching actually caused an explosion not far from the Miasmic Hall. For many days Nyx stayed within the hall, as the King and Queen agonized over what to do with her. Ultimately, Nyx became something of an 'it takes a village' child. Most everyone has helped Nyx grow and mature. Everyone magically inclined has taken part in her training, and in the end it has helped her to get a better handle on her power. Nyx is what Xaphan - the Miasma - refers to as a 'first generation goddess,' that is, a dragon with the power of a lesser deity. He claims that somewhere along his bloodline, a similar phenomenon occured and ultimately resulted in a number of powerful dragon-shaped hatchlings. It is because of this that he keeps an equally interested and wary eye on the young Imperial. Yamanu is careful to influence her to use her powers for good, despite Xaphan's warnings that a first generation lesser deity cannot be guided in such a way. While it is unknown how much of Nyx's behavior is nature and how much is nurture, the King is sure that his teachings have had some influence on her. Someday, Nyx will leave to start her own Clan or Kingdom, just as Xaphan and his siblings had. Until that day, she is a beloved member of the community, no matter how standoffish she is. Her fears of being unaccepted are unfounded; Isaure raised her socially, Yamanu and Anthean treated her as if she were their own, and even Empyre and Aleksandra took part in her raising. Nyx, beneath her emotionally unstable exterior, wants desperately to trust in someone. There's no reason for her not to, aside from the fear planted in her by the Miasma. She was very quickly struck by his stories of cruelty, and bore witness to one of Yamanu's fits of madness at a young age. Terrified to become a monster of a lesser deity, Nyx feels isolated. There are none like her that she's met, save for the Miasma and all its terror. Like many lesser deities, she feels a natural wanderlust. Eventually it will take her away from her home Kingdom, but until then, Yamanu and Anthean will continue to care for her as though she was her own. Many years passed, and the time came for Nyx to leave. She wandered the lands, searching for a place to call her own. While passing through the Tangled Wood, she happened upon a clan of mages and druids who offered to allow her to stay and learn their craft. She chose to accept, and has since learned a great deal of druidic life magic. She has decided to remain in the Tangled Wood to continue to learn the magics of growth and healing. Perhaps in time, she will leave, confident in her ability to not become a monster. |
