The first mistake Murmur made was attempting to appeal to Caieta’s sense of compassion. He hadn’t known any better, of course, but it was clear from the way Basil stifled a snort of derision that Murmur was panning for gold in a river that had long run dry.
“Young traveler, my clan is small and our resources are few. Each and every dragon here earns their keep. I have a blood mage, a diviner, a jeweler, and several capable warriors. We can’t afford a drifter with nothing to offer,” Caieta said, impassive. The second mistake was accidentally implying that the stern-faced sorceress would endear herself more to neighboring clans if her demeanor was a touch less icy. “I only meant—” Murmur backpedaled, helplessly looking to Basil for even the slightest shred of moral support, “—that perhaps more resources would avail themselves to your clan if you had a mediator of sorts.” “Are you volunteering yourself for the task, young traveler?” Caieta intoned, raising an unimpressed eyebrow. Murmur opened his mouth to answer, but thought better of it. Just as he steeled himself to apologize for wasting Caieta’s time, Basil finally took pity on him. “To be fair, Lady Caieta, he’s not incorrect. We have the space available; why not let the boy prove himself?” After several tense moments of pondering, Caieta relented. It took all of Murmur’s willpower to stop his legs from giving out under him. “You have one moon. Welcome to the clan, Murmur.” | __________ |
